i guess its the ram (bought it one at a time) or the motherboard then. is there are big difference in performance between single and dual channel?

depends on the application and settings but yes theres a significant difference of memory bandwidth

Im not sure if its a ram issue my own modules dont have dual channel certification or is not a dual chanel kit, bought this when ddr400 came out. til karons till using it and running fine.

If you can borrow a pair of ram sticks you should definitely try another pair. My first ddr400 512mb pqi came from my old socket A setup and when I upgraded to the asrock and the 3200+, I bought another memory stick and right away it went dual channel. I also tried a pair of 512mb geils on it and it ran fine in dual channel, however it wouldn't run dual channel when I put all four, (2 pqi and 2 geil sticks of 512/ddr400). I read somewhere though that the original 3200+ could not run 4 sticks in dual mode, don't know how true that is.

The none venice 3200 memory controller was severly limited to 2-3 max of memsticks, it was starting at the sandiego core that it can handle 4 sticks of dual channel memory.
