It's better explained via scenario i guess:

[ Dolby Digital enabled cards] - connected via optical cable or coaxial cable to a digital decoder/amplifier

Playing a DVD. Unprocessed signal is sent to the decoder/amplifier via the cable for decoding. Higher quality sound is the produced by the amplifier since it did all the processing of the sound.

Playing Music. An analog cable must still be supplied to play non-digital content because the amplifier won't be receiving any digital signal.

Games. Again, if the content is not digital then the amplifier won't pick it up over the digital connection and an analog cabling solution must be done.

[ Dolby Digital Live enabled cards] (Or DTS Connect for that matter)

    Playing DVD. Same.

Music. Music is sent as an encoded digital signal to the amplifier for decoding and playback. No analog cables needed anymore.

Games. Again, non-DD sounds are still encoded with Dolby technology into a raw digital signal which is then decoded by the amplifier. No analog cables needed again.

    @Zerone_null
Quick question buddy. If a premium motherboard has an S/PDIF connector on it, does that mean it's integrated sound chip is Dolby Digital Live enabled?

@weedmeister2: thanks a lot for the info bro. i'm currently restrained by my agp vcard which i'm not thinking of letting go just yet...

about dd live, isn't this the one where all sounds are encoded to dd on-the-fly (that's why its dd "live")? afaik, this was one of the highlights of nforce2 (ultra?) chipset which unfortunately wasn't carried over to future versions of the nf chipset. with this, an AV receiver only needs to decode and amplify the true dd signals from the board.

@obemon: Hey man, sup? An SPDIF output on a board only means that it is capable of transferring digital content via coaxial or optical. Dolby Digital is the signal. Most motherboards that have SPDIF out only mean they are able to pump out digital signals. Dolby Digital Live like Blade eloquently placed is "on the fly" Dolby Digital.

@cholocoy: No. X-Fi doesn't have Dolby Digital Live or DTS connect.

@blade: As always your knowledge of computer products is awesome

The Nforce 2 series of motherboards that carried the Soundstorm brand had Dolby Digital Live (AFAIK).

    Another advantage I remember now.

I'm a big fan of DivX movies.. right now on my Asrock Dual Sata I've installed some codecs and FFDshow is, well, "running the show". Back when I was still on my Nforce 2 board I need not worry about further tweaking FFdhsow or other codecs

I just set my player to output via SPDIF and the hardware takes care of encoding it on the fly! My amplifier then takes care of decoding and amplifying the signal to give me true DD sound.

Note that I say true because basically any sound that the computer tries to pump out has been converted, in this case upconverted into a dolby digital signal without going through the standard "procedures" that windows does to your sound so it can play it on the speakers.

hey weed you gonna buy that thing bro? That's gonna be a sweet-ass rig man.
LOL you might not be able to showcase that rig this Aug LP though.
August is a dim month for us..our office is moving out and we're still looking for another place to hold the geek fest party.

@blade: are you going to do a crazy OC on your x2?
