thanks sa mga input and clarification ninyo sir..

so positive jd diay nga mas hinay iyang pag-access the larger the capacity (though di jd cguru ana kanoticeable).. pro sir, makaingon na ta ug hinay iya pg-access if moabot na sa certain amount like almost 50% or more na ang used nga space? ky anam nman kapono and considering nga large amount na gyud na..

about partitioning, mas "alkanse" ba ka if kadaghan nimo epartition ang hardisk? ky dba everytime u set an amount, say 10gb, it's not really 10gb ang imong magamit.. (hehe mejo libog but i hope u get my point, hehe say 100GB partitioned into 2 drives vs. 100GB partitioned into 5 drives).. hehe..

and BTW, i'm sure u noticed when purchasing new hardisk, say it claims 40gb but then it's around 38+gb.. my question is, if ur going for 1.5tb or any higher capacity, mas modako ba ang mawala nga space? is it by percentage sa actual nga capacity niya ang mawala? (hehe i hope u get my point)..

disadvantage: when the drive goes bad, down goes 1.5T of data.

Naay uban nga NAS nga dili pa compatible sa 1.5T kung naa man gani kinahanglan pa i update ang firmware sa NAS.

mga master, im a newbie about hardware.
im a girl and guys with really nice rigs turn me on! LOL.. wahahah.. kidding.. but you know..
i really like that rig looking strong and high capacity..

i did something recently and i hope it's the right thing..
i have a dual core laptop..
and i recently bought a western digital my book 1TB connects via usb 2.0 external harddrive..
naay siyay murag built in free trial software mimeo na wala au ko kasabot unsa na siya..
then it started to create it's own back ups na i didnt understand so i uninstalled the built in mimeo software that automatically installs itself when you first use the drive..
    daghan ko question..

    1. i noticed there's no difference sa pag transfer nako ug files..
maybe because 100 gig kapin pa ang sulod ani..

the way i understand the missing MBS of space is because 1 gig is equall to 1060MB (something) ang 1T.. something to do with the bytes and kbs and churvah.. so i know it always has missing number of mbs.. and it is always consistent how many are missing.. i think there's a math way to get it... not sure though...

ask lang ko unsaon pag partition? hehehehe.. i dnt know how to..

    Lord, ayaw tawon..
how do we make sure that the drive functions well? and how do we take care of an external hardrive..?

my altec lansing subwoofer went bad!!!
as in naay major humming sound.. bought it back to thinking tools for repair..
now i have to wait a month kay padala pa sa service center sa manila..

i hope i didnt do anything wrong

Only disadvantage i know about large capacity HDD's is when you need to back it up.

if imo na i-partition, it is still actually one disk, one physical disk. actually, makapahinay pa gani ang partitioning sa HDD sa overall speed sa pag access sa imong files.
    uki..thnx...., mao pd bitaw!hehehe

i disagree, nga mas hinay ang file access sa HDD nga dako ug capacity. assuming pareho ug rotational speed, e.g. 7200rpm, mas dako ka ma-cover nga area ang read/write head sa 1.5TB compared sa 160 or 320GB nga HDDs. mas dense man ang pagka-pack sa data sa larger capacity HDDs, it means your read/write head wouldn't need to move that much to access a particular file (also assuming nga maayo pagka defrag imo HDDs).

you can't scan a free space or even defrag it.

    defragmentation wiki:
defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.
    how about this:

i've been using defraggler for quite some time.

medyo misleading ang pag-specify sa mga HDD manufacturers sa capacity sa ila drives. kahibaw man ta nga ang giga- is a prefix denoting 10^9, so 160GB means 160,000,000,000 bytes. but bytes man ang gi-prefix nga giga- so sa mga nakahibalo about bytes, naturally i-multiply ang 1024 three times which would give 160GB a total of 171,798,691,840 bytes. the GB in HDDs usually refers to the number (160 in this case) followed by nine zeroes, not exactly the latter (160x1024x1024x1024). but the OS calculates this way so malibog ang mamalitay why naa discrepancy.

    sa specs ~ sa OS

    160GB ~ 149GB
    320GB ~ 298GB
    500GB ~ 466GB

    and so on...

for more info, read this, Gigabyte - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

defrag refers to un-fragmenting. defraggler used the wrong word, i dont know the logic of arranging fragments in a free space.

HDD had increased in capacity, but the access time time had not coped up with the density. density refers to capacity. the only way to increase access time as of now is to increase RPM. it is very minute, but there is a difference if we have same RPM and everything.
