Also there are some native chat clients in linux, just google for it lang.
Some notables are BitchX, XChat, etc... Try to find these in the applications available to you. Maybe your sys ad just set install to default installation of chat clients...

Or you can use Opera for Linux, it has a chat client integrated and it works just great and I'm using it as my primary IRC client.. no more additional extensions and all and your sys ad will probably understand that you need another browser aside from firefox, konqueror or whats installed in ur Mandriva..
