JAKARTA -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's easternmost Papua province on Tuesday, sparking panic among residents but no reported casualties, meteorologists said.
The temblor came just days after a powerful quake left more than 5,400 dead on central Java Island.
The quake struck Papua at 0328 GMT, with an epicenter located 115 kilometers (70 miles) northwest of central Wamena district, said Fadili Yusuf, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.
"It was felt strongly in Wamena and caused panic among the population," he said, adding there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.6.

SooooO right! that's why our President ordered the NDCC to counduct earthquake preparedness drill because of this tragedy that could possibly happen to Phillipines too.Posted by: baron
Another tragedy. Maybe we can share a little help to victims of the earthquake.
My college professor once told his class, earthquake is good for the earth, but not good for the people.
Let us be reminded that we should also be prepared for any calamity that we might be encountering in the future. Maybe we could start preparing today to prevent any great harm that may happen should we face such natural calamities in the near future. We should start checking highly populated establishments such as malls, high rise buildings, schools, churches and recreation areas because these areas are those which are prone to be greatly affected in case something unfortunate happens.
GMA orders quake drills
āI am directing the [council] to coordinate with other government agencies in conducting earthquake-preparedness drills in schools, business districts, and public places nationwide as part of our disaster awareness campaign,ā the President said.
āOur preparedness at all times is important to minimize the loss of lives and property.ā

Yeah. I think it's time that some organization or angency out there will actually try to evaluate for the safety of our buildings during earthquakes, diba such agencies exist in Japan and elsewhere, na they try to determine whether a building will survive a specific richter scale earthquake and label it as safe and unsafe?
I hope naa na dre pod, so we'll know which buildings to improve and also be warned of dangerous establishments...
ito na...GMA wants quake-prone buildings repaired
PGMA has ordered NDCC Sec. Avelino Cruz to immediately conduct repair and rehabilitation works on school buildings found to be prone to damage and collapse in strong earthquakes.
She also directed NDCC to intesify the conduct of earthquake drills in schools, offices and other public places to equip the students, employees and the common man on earthquake preparedness measures.
Meanwhile, Sec. Cruz said that he will be working or getting intouch with DPWH heads for immediate and ordered plan for this project.

Good thing the president had ordered this repair for those public places since we really don't know what nature will bring. At least, we are prepared for any such occurrence.
As much as we want to secure the safety and security of the youth who go to schools, the president wanted us to be prepared for any natural calamity that might beset us. Hence, the order is a glaring reminder to us that it is not only the government should prepare for such but also each of us.
