if they are a legitimate group they should teach bare hands, its just the same techniques and concepts when using a stick or knife. you start off with a stick, then knife then bare hands. start with a long weapon, going to a short weapon and eventually into bare hands. its the reverse philosophy in east asian martial arts where they start off with empty hands and learning weaponry when they go to a higher level.
