these are the common guidelines for someone who's setting up a server. what implementations do you want on your network?

do you need the workstations domain-controlled?
will these workstations retrieve their ip address from the server (DHCP) or static?
do you need to have restrictions on the workstations? (policies)
do you need the server to host outlook exchange or act as a email server? (email)
will the server act as a storage for the files for the workstations?
do you need to access the workstations through the server from outside? (VPN)

these are the usual guidelines i use when i'm setting up a server.
