Before heavier than air flight was achieved by the Wright Brothers, they used large unmanned kites (a machine).

Before Gagarin became the first human in space, Sputnik was first in orbit (a machine).

Before Lovell, Borman, and Anders became the first humans to reach the moon, Lunik was first (a machine).

Before Armstrong and Aldrin stepped on the moon, Ranger, Lunokhod, and Surveyor landed first (machines).

You must send machines first, before sending humans. It's how it's been done, and it's how it WILL be done, in the case of Mars.

Ehh? The first time a lander ever arrived on mars was May of 1976 (Viking). For the record this is only the 3rd successful direct descent landing on Mars, and only the 5th successful landing (three others were via bouncing airbags...Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity). From 1972 to 2004, 4 other attempts were made but failed (2 of them Russian landers), most famous failure is Beagle.

If that is how you view scientific endeavors, and if you had been born during that time, your statement should've been stated during 1976
