Yeah, commercial photography is the most common although Narciso Contreras falls under photojournalism which is somewhat difficult to get in, IMO.

People here can give you advise, tips, which camera and lens to get but at the end of the discussion, it's all about what kind of photographer you want to be. If you want to be a commercial photographer, study effective lighting for product photography, observe commercial posters and billboards, attend workshops and photography trade shows, make contact with prospective clients and fellow photographers. Really, it's all about your contacts.

If you want to be a photojournalist, start shooting public events, invest into radio scanner and eavesdrop on law enforcement dispatch to track any possible breaking stories, create Twitter account and keep track what is trending in your area, and etc. Check out PCP, Inc. | Photojournalists' Center of the Philippines for more info on photojournalism. If you go to the members section and ask one of them some question, they might be happy to entertain you.

Not yet started photography myself so dili pako matawag newbie

I think the easiset way is to go the direct route ug diki na magpaligoyligoy.
Kami kay hobby ra pwd mi sa mga crop sensor cams ug consumer lenses.
Ikaw idirekta nalang para dili ka magwaste ug money in the end.
