Here is another idea a got from other sources:
im going to say that Isshin was a Captain - possibly of the 3rd before Rose, was "asked" to jion the Royal Guard, declined, ran away with the help of Kisuke, dishonored the Shiba or one of the other major noble houses, hid out in the real world with his wife, ran into Kisuke and Yoriuchi, got the untracable and power binding gigais, held on to the Kisuke's big mistake for a while, then regained his powers when it was transfered to Rukia.
1) Isshin was a captain - the cloak, the reference to captain level power, the knowledge of protective charms and kon's presence, reference to fighting previous arancar.
2)possibly the 3rd - Rose mentions being a relativily new captain after the previous one "retired" (we know from Kisuke that no one really retires *rats nest), also the 11th is unlikely Kenpachi may well have been a new captain at the time since they mention a crazy strong new captain of the 11th in the meeting. Further, 10th before toshiro is unlikely to me - that would mean almost every living Captain knows Isshin personally and Rangiku would have been his subordinate. I doubt she would sneek into his house without letting anything slip. For those who would have known him, most are visards or are so "creepy wise" been ancient their motivation for not telling Ichigo who he is in relation to his illustriaous father is up for debate.
3)Was asked to jion the Royal Guard - i think it would be an easy plot device to make him leave, maybe he didn't want to jion a different demension, maybe his wife was actually a soul reaper and he didn't want to leave her behind, maybe he just wanted to stop killing stuff (this piont in my theory is yielding *method point A to point B)
4) Ran away with help of Kisuke - I think Misaki may have once been a soul reaper was well, and so with the help of two (cat and clogs) friends, the two or maybe just one leave for the real world, a cushy distance from the ensuing drama. Explains why he doesn't know the full details of vizards and why he doesn;t push Kisuke to for too many details. a) he knows how kisuke is and that he probably wouldn't get it if he was told. b) he owes kisuke a debt.
5)Dishonor the noble family- well known that noble families can and will lose their status, byakuya seems to know Ichigo is related to someone, and a favorite phrase in reference to ichigo is "just who are you." The powers of the Clans seem to be the most potent and only noble families seem able to reproduce. Children are rare in the coul society. Also the idea that Isshin is a Shiba is nice - that would make the family resemblace work, but I don't think it really matters. Plus I don't think Ichigo and sibs have ever been human - in so far as their physical bodies are half or all gigai.
6) Hid out in the Real World - he moved a bit maybe with his wife in or out of soul reaper form or gigai until kisuke comes careening into the picture not long after with his big mistake in hand. After limited explanation either Misaki or Isshin become the vesel in the new untracable gigai Kisuke made. Whoever is holding the hyougoku is given a gigai similar to the one given to Rukia - rendering them powerless and human. I think this would point to Misaki. The fact Ichigo is a vizard, though never in contact with the hollowfication pathogan or hyougoku to his knowledge, indicates that maybe he could have been exposed before the plot. Makes his wierd powers make sence if he was always a hollow. Plus Misaki is mentioned as explicitly human at one or another point, but she runs to save her son - instantly seeing a potential danger in his running to a "lost child" in a rain storm. Further and unrelated, Shinji never says in the magna that he doesn't recognize Isshin's pressure, he just ignores it - which knowing him indicates he knows exactly who it is. Ishin not knowing could be that he forgot (i doubt that), he hasnt regain enough of his power to recognize it (doubt that), he is just like his son ans can't identify pressure unless its to save his life (maybe, maybe not), or Shinji's pressure is essentially different now that he is a vizard. (orihime says ichigo's changed in his hollow form - why can't shinji's)
7)Got untracable and power binding gigai - okay so we know the untracable gigai wasnt created until right prior to the vizard incident for some arcane reason or another where you're suppose to shake your head and say "Ah-huh." So giving Isshin one could not have happened until Kisuke got to the real world. At this piont I'm seeing a potential for why Isshin abadons his form for 20 odd years before. After deciding what they were going to due with the Hyougoku, Isshin is forced into a permanent (or so he thought) human form. The vizards apparently cant get out of theirs and don't need to, but the kurosaki's break seals and convention all the time. Plus bearing or sharing the hyougoku for 20 years can really take it out of a person.
Regained his power when the hyougoku is given to Rukia - During their conversation, Kisuke askes if he has regained his powers. I think whatever was preventing him from using them is now out of his system - could it be Hyougoku.
Anyway - Definitly don't think he is a vizard. Definatly think Misaki is a bigger deal than just Ichigo's died mom. Definatly dont think he was captain of the 10th.
