Aquaponics is a creative process. In principle, most practitioner would not want to use soil as growing medium, as I said, using soil would influence your pH, etc., However, no one can stop you if you use soil, you can try and see what happens. Most use gravel, pebbles, coco coir, peat, pearlite to hold the plant. Soil can hold the plant but it influences your water. I have seen quite a number of combinations, some work and some do not work.
Aquaponics is like learning to ride the bicycle. Unless you do it yourself and start playing around with it, you'll not really know. You may experience some downfalls-fishkills, etc., but experience is the best teacher. Your know how will come after you get your knees and hands bruised, you'll not learn to ride it. But once you get a feel of it, you'd enjoy the different sceneries brought about the enjoyment of having learned to to ride the bicycle.
