FOLLOWING a heartbreaking loss to defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters this week, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers bounced back well with a 68-54 victory over a pesky University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers yesterday in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
UV had the early advantage going into the second quarter with a 14-7 lead and as early as that quarter, UV fielded some of its reserve players. Despite using its bench players, UV’s lead ballooned to 17 points, 32-15, at halftime.
After UV scored the first two baskets in the third period for a 21-point cushion, 36-15, USPF surprisingly turned it into a game with a 20-4 rally to narrow the deficit at five, 40-35.
UV turned down low to Edrian Lao at the start of the fourth, with him scoring the first six points of UV for a 51-42 lead.
The Green Lancers started to pull away midway in the fourth and John Abad sealed the game with two back-to-back three points with less than four minutes left. Abad was UV’s top scorer with 19 points off the bench. Jomari Sollano had 13 points in a losing effort by the Jaguars.
Win streak
The other day, UC remained unbeaten with a 100-81 rout over winless Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats.
Robinson Mohammad led UC with 25 points, while Floyd Taboada had an amazing scoring performance with 27.
UC sits at the top of the collegiate rankings with a 5-0 record, while CIT-U is at the bottom of the heap with 0-5.
Like UC, the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras also breezed to an easy 83-59 victory over the lowly University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.
Towering center Justin Aboude had a game high of 20 points for the Cobras, which improved to 2-3, while Abucaiz Suliman had 20 points for the hobbling Jaguars, which fell to 1-4.
High school
On the other hand, in the high school division games yesterday, the USPF Baby Panthers bounced back from a humiliating loss and handed the CIT-U Baby Wildcats its third straight loss this season, 89-85.
USPF’s scoring load was carried by the tandem of Winston Bulivar and Rommel Diapera, who had 33 and 31 points respectively. Nikko Otadoy led CIT-U with 28 points. USPF is now 2-2, while CIT-U is 1-3.
Defending champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons crushed USJ-R Baby Jaguars, 86-68, and retained its spot at third in the standings.
James Sumayang paced CEC with 19 points, while Al Bayucot scored 19 for USJ-R.
CEC upped its record to 3-1, while USJ-R slumped to 1-3.

CEBU, Philippines - Defending champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras blasted separate rivals in the 11th Cebu Schools athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Webmasters sizzled to a 100-81 thrashing of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats to move within a win of completing a six-game elimination round sweep, while the Cobras hammered the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 83-59.
In the secondary matches, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers tamed the Baby Jaguars, 85-77, to stay unbeaten in five games, while the Junior Webmasters finally barged into the win column after they clobbered the Wildkittens, 79-64.
Robinson Mohammad fired seven triples of his 25 points, while 6-foot-9 center June Mar Fajardo and Edward Pao controlled the rebounding department even as they chipped in 21 points combined.
John Raphael Aranas added 16 points, while Quinton Brian Heruela pitched in 13 markers underscoring UC's balanced offensive.
Former UC juniors Floyd Taboada exploded with a game-high 27 points but to no avail as the Webmasters crashed to their fifth straight defeat.

The league’s powerhouses continued their purge of the rest of the field as the University of Cebu (UC), the University of the Visayas (UV) and Southwestern University (SWU) posted easy victories in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Yesterday, the UV Green Lancers utilized their heft and height advantage in the fourth period to hack out a 68-54 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers. Bullstrong forward Edrian Lao scored UV’s first six points in the final frame that anchored an 8-2 run which turned a 45-40 lead into a 53-42 advantage.
The Panthers actually were down, 15-32, at halftime, but fought valiantly with a 20-4 run that got them within just five. However, that was as close as they would get with lefty guard John Abad eventually sealing the win with consecutive three-pointers which gave them a 64-45 lead with 3:55 left in the game.
Abad ended up with 19 points while Lao added 13 as UV improved to 4-2 (win-loss) while USPF fell to 3-2.
The reigning champions UC Webmasters also made short work of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U)Wildcats, 100-81, late Tuesday night.
The victory pushed their record to a league-leading 5-0 as Robinson Mohammad waxed hot from beyond the arc and scored a game-high 25. John Aranas also chipped in 16 while Junemar Fajardo managed just 12 in limited minutes.
The SWU Cobras dominated the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 83-59.
In juniors action, the reigning champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons got their third win against a lone loss after they blasted the USJ-R Baby Jaguars, 86-68.
The USPF Baby Panthers, meanwhile, got a combined 64 points from Winston Bolivar and Rommel Diapera as they won, 89-85, over CIT-U. Bolivar had 33 while Diapera added 31.
