The heroes of the EDSA Revolution are the people not the Aquinos. The Aquinos are overrated.
Wow! Reading some of the previous posts here about the Marcoses, martial law and the People Power Revolution make me shiver thinking about the level of misinformation our younger generation have about that era. Those who forget the past are bound to repeat it, and this is what is happening now. Marcos had absolute control over the judiciary and the legislative branch (KBL) and the current president is attempting, in my opinion, to do the same. The Philippines was better off during Marcos' time? My foot! We were under IMF supervision. The peso had depreciated by more than 1000%! Our debt to GDP ratio was very high and we practically had very limited foreign reserves.
I was working the night shift in one of the factories in Cebu when it was announced that the Marcoses had fleed. Radio station DYRC was playing the song "Happy Days are Here Again" and we were all ecstatic, dancing and hugging each other in the factory. Alas, after 26 years, the Philippines remains the sick man of Asia. We are to blame for this because we keep electing the same families with no track record to speak of, the oligarchs with their own vested interests, to public office. We deserve our misery!
