ni9ce water fall, asa ni dapit sa davao...but i dont think nice ang water rafting dri...if mao lang ni ang source sa river murag hinay ra ni..
IMHO, the pictures above are just Class1 to Class2+.
I don't think that's a Class3 rapids.
Mura ra man ni (ang rapids) ug suba sa Cugman.
CDO has Class3 & 4 rapids almost all year round.
I think CDO is the right Whitewater Rafting & Kayaking capital in Pinas.
Cagayan Valley can also claim that rights. But only during the rainy season.
The water level is massive compared to other rivers, i.e. during the rainy season.

White water rafting in Cagayan de Oro
by reuel vidal
WHITE water rafting ranks right up there with skydiving as one of the things I’d like to do in my lifetime. Thanks to the Alaska Aces, who invited me to observe their teambuilding, I can cross this out of my “Bucket List” of things to do before I die because I finally experienced this adventure of a lifetime in Cagayan de Oro last weekend.
The adventure started last Friday in a river trek at the Mapawa Nature Park. We arrived at the site after a 30-minute tractor ride. The river trek involved walking along the riverbed downstream past seven falls. Of the seven falls, three challenged the bravery and resolve of even the hardiest adventure seeker.
The first challenge was deceptively easy because it was so much fun. It involved sliding down a 25-foot natural water slide and landing into a deep pool.
It ranks as one of my most memorable life experiences because when I slid down the slope I forgot to remove my heavy trekking boots. I am a reasonably good swimmer but weighed down by my boots, I sank like a rock down almost to the bottom of the sinkhole (a good 30-feet deep) after the slide.
I tried my best not to panic as I swam to the surface, but regular swimming was impossible because with the heavy boots I couldn’t kick with my feet to swim upward. I frantically used my hands but I seemed to be moving in slow motion. The thought flashed in my mind that I could die down there.
I finally broke the surface after what seemed like an eternity and immediately shouted for help. Alert guides fished me out, but not before I swallowed a pitcher of icy cold water.
The second challenge involved what looked like a suicide jump from a ledge into a deep pool 30 feet below. Several of the guides had already jumped to show that it was not suicide to do so. Still everyone else milled around the ledge and didn’t jump.
Because I had to take pictures, I decided I had to be the first one off the ledge. After I jumped, everybody had to jump or be shown up by a 52-year-old, fat, overweight, bald journalist.
The third and final challenge involved a heart-stopping rappel down the 65-foot Mapawa Falls. Because he had already done it before Jojo Lastimosa rappelled down first.
After seeing how it was done I rappelled down second. The players, showing varying degrees of emotion from composed excitement to outright fear, came down one after the other.
All the players answered what seemed like a death-defying challenge. Coach Tim Cone, Tony Dela Cruz and Willie Miller liked it so much they did it twice.
I finally experienced white water rafting the following day on Saturday. The ride involved a 17-kilometer ride down the mighty Cagayan de Oro River passing through 21 exciting rapids.
Each rapids had its own character and the guides actually named each one of them. Easily the most challenging were the “Long ride” which was a one-kilometer stretch of wild rapids and the “Table top” which involved riding over one huge boulder protruding over the wild rapids like a table top.
The rapids gave me more excitement than any thrill ride in any amusement park I’ve been to and I’m glad to be able to cross out white water rafting from my “Bucket List.”
It was also exciting to see the natural beauty of Cagayan de Oro still preserved in its pristine splendor. I just hope that it stays that way for the coming generations of Filipinos to enjoy.

Even on a short stay in Davao you can feel it. It’s a city with an optimistic swagger in its stride. Some overcautious outsiders still like to ask about security whenever anywhere on the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao is mentioned, but the locals and migrants from around the country and across the globe who call this easy-paced city home are better informed than that.
Size is perhaps part of the secret behind the quiet confidence: it is officially one of the largest cities in the world. But there’s also the
fact that business is booming. While the city’s exports were once upon a time all about the fruit that grows so easily in the fertile volcanic soils of the hinterland, today the economy has diversified and that includes getting into tourism of all types.
Better flight connections to domestic and international destinations have helped, along with the advent of more sophisticated resorts
and the growth of a local adventure scene that has spawned operators to take you out and show you around the coasts, cones, cliffs
and caves of a region finally getting some long-overdue attention.
Diving
Islands in the stream
Just off the coast lie Samal Island and its smaller neighbour Talicud and many divers choose to base themselves out there where sites are just a short boat ride away.
Both islands are ringed with sites – more than 20 are commonly visited – and between them they offer a wide cross-section of
conditions and attractions. There are the walls of the north coast of Talicud, a couple of WWII cargo ship wrecks, several caves, drift dives and shallow hunt-the-critter ambles at little more than snorkel depth.
Punta del Sol is a popular starting point for many novice divers with a highly accessible car wreck only 6m down, just one focal point. Close by is Allen’s Rock which gives the more experienced something to relish, dropping you down past 30m.
There’s also a cluster of dive spots halfway down Samal’s west coast and this is where those two shipwrecks are located, down at
around 40m. The other sites here are also worth diving for they offer neatly contrasting views of the local marine life. If you are lucky you may discover a pygmy seahorse on a seafan at Beng’s Corner, while Marissa 1, 2 and 3 are pelagic territory, with hawksbill turtles sometimes showing up along with various deepwater fish species.
Rafting
Davao descents
Whitewater aficionados have a habit of looking at maps, going straight to any visible mountain ranges and excitedly tracing watersheds through canyons with their fingers. Do this with the island of Mindanao and you’re going to get tired hands – the island has some serious kayaking and rafting potential.
While it was Cagayan de Oro, in the north of the island, that led the way, more recently the rivers of Davao have come in for scrutiny, resulting in commercial operations on a threehour, 14km stretch of the Davao River.
Water levels, fed by an extensive watershed, can fluctuate impressively, offering huge haystack waves and monster holes in high water. Even in low water, the run generates Class III river running and plans are afoot to offer runs of various levels of difficulty.
Further afield, the rio incognitos in the Apo watershed and the wilds of Bukidnon look very tempting, though those remain the preserve of expedition-level boaters for the time being.
Zip-lining
Trip wires
Zip lines are all the rage at the moment and at Camp Sabros, close to the checkpoint on the road that leads to Mt Apo, there’s a pair that the operator claims are among the longest single lines in Asia.
Each is over 300m long, with the first a more gentle ride across a forested valley. The thrill can be heightened though by making the trip in a sling which means you are in a lying position, head forward, and so moving faster.
Then, once across the valley, you can return on a simple cableway or you can head uphill to the jump-off for a longer and faster run that sends you screaming through a hole in the trees and back to your start point. You work up a fair bit of speed on this one so there’s even a small parachute to be deployed by those unnerved by the speed.
Trekking and caving
Beyond Apo
The main event for keen trekkers is definitely the climb on Apo (see box on previous page), but there are numerous other options including day hikes to waterfalls or to Puting Bato, the highest viewpoint on Samal Island. Mountain lovers will also enjoy the jungle hike up Mt Matutum (2,293m), a conical peak to the west of Apo, that sees far less traffic.
Many of the same areas are also venues for troglodytes who like to do their exploring underground. While there is not yet any commercial caving, the limestone in the area is riddled with chambers.
If you fancy getting deep down and dirty in any of them, contact any of the main gear shops in the city, all of whom can connect you with local cavers.

Sports Unlimited
April 26, 2008
Sports Unlimited continues its passion for the outdoors! We live for adventure and we admire excellence in sports.
They say "art imitates life", we say "adventure adds life" that's why we are adding bright and bold colors to our summer by heading to "WOW DAVAO" to experience the best of adventures from islands to highlands!
So far on this Sports Unlimited DESTINATION DAVAO SPECIAL we have experienced the peak of exhilaration from mountain trekking, to zipping, island hopping, nature, and this time we are going on a WHITE WATER RIVER RAFTING ADVENTURE to further feed our massive appetite for the OUTDOORS.
Before heading to the Davao River we made a pit stop at the CROCODILE PARK where the DAVAO WILDWATER ADVENTURES HEADQUARTERS is to fill out the necessary paperwork and also to get some of the gear we will need for this river rafting adventure.
All riders need to be in HELMETS. You’ll see why later and since this is a water adventure LIFE VESTS are a must.
Once you have everything you need there is a special shuttle bus that takes you from the crocodile park directly to the Davao River.
Once we got to the river we were given an important BRIEFING about everything we need to know to assure a safe, injury-free journey from start to finish.
Helmets on! Life vests are securely fastened….paddles in our hands brand new state of-the-art rafts are waiting by the river. We're all set and raring to go on this river adventure that we're told should take about 4 to 5 hours.
Marc and I went on the same raft and of course what mommy does Matthew wants to do too so Mat was also in our group.
Sonny Dizon ordered all the rafting equipment from abroad for this adventure so there will be even more reason for everyone to come and visit Davao... Sonny's Mantra... "See what is out there and then do what you can to make it more exciting to go there".
Allright, I know we may seem all relaxed and dry right now enjoying the paddling and the magnificent scenery surrounding us...but it will not stay as calm and quiet like this for long we were told that the rapids are approaching and we should be focused and prepared.
A few more reminders if you plan to go white water rafting. Getting very wet is part and parcel of this adventure even if you do not fall off the raft that does not mean you will not get drenched. In fact getting wet is inevitable so make sure you wear something that is suitable for the water.
If you plan to bring footwear make sure it is the kind that cannot fall off your feet the river does not need another pair of flip-flops there have been way too many of them that have fallen down the deep end already.
We ourselves practiced what to do in the water if we fall off the raft and then the ones on the raft practiced how to get the person who fell back in the raft we're already having so much fun and the real wildness of the rapids has yet to begin.
HERE COME THE RAPIDS.... PADDLE! PADDLE!! PADDLE!!!
Again!!! HARD PADDLE!!!
RIGHT PADDLE!!!
LEFT PADDLE!!!
EASY PADDLE!!!
This is brilliant, our river guides told us if we want to have a fighting chance when we paddle through the rapids we need to follow their directions on when to paddle hard.
When to paddle easy and when to stop paddling. It's not as simple as just paddling any way you want.
Also we are seated strategically on both sides of the raft...when we hear our guide say PADDLE RIGHT that means only the people seated at the right side of the boat will paddle and PADDLE LEFT only the ones seated on the left side will paddle.
More rapids up ahead this time we need to maneuver and get our raft to go in between boulders… big boulders PADDLE HARD! STOP PADDLING! and just go with the flow PHEW that was close.
Now this is what white water rafting is all about. Not knowing what lies ahead and what to expect is the bulk of the thrill of this adventure. That was a wicked rapid the more rapids the merrier is what we're saying. Now this is the kind of wildness we like.
What is this? A cave! Now how cool is this pit stop in the river is in a real cave.... VERY COOL.
Drinking water dripping from the cave...that's even cooler. Alright gang... our guides say...we need to get going... we still have a long way to go... and there's still a lot of
fun and action to be had.
What makes this river journey so fabulous aside from the wet and wild action you get from the rapids there are also so many sights to be seen like this waterfall. Sonny and our guides tell us that sometimes you will find this waterfall here but sometimes you don't, depending on the weather that's why they call it "THE DISAPPEARING WATERFALL".
Well luck had it that today the waterfall appeared and we took advantage of everything it had to offer. There is nothing more exotic than taking a shower under a waterfall the water is cold a lot colder than the river.
We may have left our cell phones on dry land but not our cameras thanks to technology our waterproof cameras will allow us to remember this unforgettable experience forever.
We may be wet but believe me all that paddling has created heat in our bodies which is why a nice cold dip in this natural pool by the waterfall was a great relief.
We were having so much fun on this journey that we did not even think of having a meal but THE GROUP are outdoor specialists and have everything planned for us.
They have a specially prepared spot by the river where they make a stop for all their guests to enjoy a packed picnic feast!
Look at this they even took the time to put up an awesome welcome banner for Sports Unlimited. You guys are the best!
Lunch was great this stop also gave our whole group an opportunity to bond and of course to re-fuel before we tackle the last part of the river which we were told was where the rapids get a little more challenging. BRING IT ON!
With satisfied stomachs we all got back on our respective rafts and paddled away.
We see WILDER RAPIDS up ahead and bigger boulders. Our guide tells us that we need to paddle more aggressively or else we could get stuck in the boulders.
One of the best parts about making it through the rapids is when we all raise our paddles and celebrate in unison you feel an instant sense of accomplishment.
If you like paddling this adventure is perfect for you!
The great part about white water river rafting is that it has everything you get exercise, camaraderie, and good times. Combine that with the BEAUTY and
GRANDEUR of the river and you have the perfect anecdote for an unforgettable adventure.
We passed through a few more brilliant rapids and then we finally reached the end of this 13-kilometer river journey. This white water rafting adventure has definitely turned what could have been an ordinary day at the river into an unforgettable time. This is absolutely one of the best times we've had on a river all our five senses were treated to a field day. This white water rafting adventure was wet, wild and wicked "WOW DAVAO" that's what we're saying.
