Cebu City cops run after ‘Joavan’
Joavan Fernandez, Mayor Socrates Fernandez’s adopted son, allegedly threatened a mall security guard after they argued on Gen. Maxilom Ave., Cebu City yesterday afternoon.
Mango Square security guard Ronald Ruiz alleged Joavan pointed a gun at him. It was not clear from the initial police report how he identified the mayor’s son.
The exchange took place allegedly after Joavan argued with a foreigner inside the mall, then went outside with his friends. A “TV Patrol” report said he vented his anger at Ruiz, arguing with him and threatening him after drawing out his gun.
Alarmed, Ruiz radioed his fellow security guards and told them what happened.
The Mobile Patrol Group’s base control operator Nelson Acebedo told Sun.Star Cebu in a phone interview he received a phone call at 2:17 p.m. from a security guard identified only by his family name, Abong.
Abong told Acebedo that Joavan and his other friend, who was wearing a fatigue uniform, were armed.
Acebedo then radioed the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team, which rushed to the mall.
When the Swat arrived, the government-owned red Revo (SGH-541) allegedly used by Joavan’s group had already left the mall’s parking area.
Acebedo radioed all stations to set up roadblocks.
A Pardo police team led by SPO4 Gomercendo Mandaue chased the Revo as soon as it passed by their station. They cornered it in front of a private school in Barangay Bulacao, Cebu City, but found only the driver, Benedict Gabasa, 28.
Gabasa, allegedly drunk, surrendered after the police pointed their guns at him. He said he is a Talisay City employee but denied he was with Joavan’s group. He had no driver’s license.
When he got off the car, Mandaue and his fellow policemen saw a knapsack, two shoulder bags, cell phones, and car plate numbers inside.
Pardo’s police chief, Senior Insp. Edgar Nacario, said they stopped the car at 2:37 p.m. They are still doing a background check on Gabasa.
Nacario revealed that before the mall incident, a certain Guillermo Longakit of Barangay Cogon-Pardo, Cebu City, complained at the station at 9 a.m. yesterday.
Longakit said his male helper told him Joavan, who was allegedly armed, and three cohorts were looking for him at 7 a.m.
Cebu City Police Office Dirrector Ramon Melvin Buenafe said in a text message that “appropriate cases will be filed against” Gabasa, who is now detained in the Pardo Police Station.
Buenafe also ordered the Traffic Group to check the vehicle’s documents. The Revo was impounded.
Security guard Ruiz did not have the mall incident recorded by the Fuente Police, the nearest station. Buenafe said the police can give him protection if he decides to press charges. (KAL)
