Family brings fight online

THE family of the suspected shoplifter who was mauled to death while being interrogated allegedly by mall security personnel has taken their quest for justice online.

A Facebook account called “Justice for Mario Alfie Ducayag” has been created to pressure authorities to bring his killers to court.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, the account received 3,657 “likes” from people who came across the page since it was created last April 17.

Family members called for witnesses to help find the truth about the death of Ducayag. "Is killing someone the best way to stop shoplifting?” asked a family member.

Ducayag, 23, died while being investigated allegedly by guards belonging to the Golden Sun Security Agency and Negrense Security Agency inside the Metro Gaisano on Colon St., Cebu City. Ducayag was suspected of lifting a pair of slippers from the store after he failed to present a receipt for his purchase last April 12. Reports later said Ducayag paid for the item.

A police autopsy on Ducayag showed he died of asphyxia or lack of oxygen in the body due to pulmonary tuberculosis, while the National Bureau of Investigation found out he was mauled. He had a dislocated cervical vertebrae and bruises in his palms, right shoulder, chest and back, the bureau report said.

Credited for pursuing Ducayag’s case was Bombo Radyo–Cebu for not letting go of the story despite the initial versions of the security personnel and the police. Regional police chief Marcelo Garbo Jr. had said the investigation would continue.

On Facebook, citizens vented their outrage over Ducayag’s plight and offered suggestions to the security agencies involved and the mall owners. Tell the truth. Support the victim’s family, especially his young children. One lawyer offered his services to the family to pursue cases in court.

Taking a fight online has its advantages, among them, gaining community support to an advocacy like a call for justice and putting pressure on authorities because not taking action would expose them to ridicule in social media. There are disadvantages, as well, like pinning blame on the innocent or judging without hearing the other side or due process.

Ducayag’s case as presented on Facebook has, so far, elicited outrage and calls for action from the community. As some people suggested, the only ways for the family to make sense of Ducayag’s death were to make those responsible account for their actions and for regulating agencies to impose stricter supervision of security personnel in malls.
