You have to be tough to be in the military, but in fairness to the detractors it's also not correct to say that this is really necessary or that it is happening in all armies around the world. It's more of a tradition than a necessity, to think about it in a real battle how many soldiers get captured compared to getting killed?

My college roommate who was a Singaporean was assigned to the Commando unit as part of their universal military training. The training was really tough but he said there was no physical maltreatment or hazing involved. But the training he told me about sounded pretty tough and I doubt many people would survive it, the commando unit undergoes the toughest training in Singapore, not even the officer corps goes through the same training they do. So there's a difference between tough training and pure hazing. I don't think anyone here would question the combat readiness of Singapore's commandos.

Some of you I am sure have seen A Few Good Men, which shows that this kind of thing happened in the U.S. military at one point. But of course it raised such an outrage that the military had to change its ways. I've no doubt that if this kind of thing still occurred it would be all over the U.S. media since they are really hungry for that kind of sensationalism, so I would say that this practice has ended at least at West Point. Feel free to disagree if you think otherwise...

from the looks of it you don't understand what "SERE" training is. and of course the officer corps don't undergo the training the commando's do. that's why they are called commando's for a reason. "SERE" training is different. its not the conventional training exercise people would undergo. "SERE" training is for people with a unique job in the military. even i couldn't get into "SERE" training cause the training is conducted for people with unique skills. and plus "SERE" training has categories for certain jobs in the military.

and in regards to leaking video's. all of us here in the states are tagged so the federal agents have no problem tracking the persons leaking those kinds of video's to the public.

But the Commando unit in Singapore is the top and most hardcore military unit in Singapore. If they aren't undergoing SERE which you say is reserved for the best, then it's not being used anywhere else in their military.

Besides, that video of our army guys being hazed doesn't look to me like they are any kind of special unit or people with unique skills, they look like plain infantrymen, so that in itself puts the whole practice into question. If in other countries SERE is reserved for special units with unique skills why are we applying it to ordinary soldiers in an infantry brigade?

To address this, as I understand American law, they have laws to protect whistle-blowers who reveal violations of U.S. law. In a democracy the military must defer to the will of civilian government and obey the laws passed by civilian authorities. Physical hazing and/or torture is illegal under any circumstance and is penalized under law. This is the will of the American people as expressed by their representatives, that is why such law exists. A military that doesn't respect laws and doesn't obey its civilian masters is like a wild dog that can't be controlled by its owner.

I think the same principles apply here as well. We have laws passed by civilian authorities forbidding such acts under any circumstance. The signing of waivers doesn't negate criminal liability, so the act portrayed here is still in violation of civilian law and an act of defiance against civilian rule.
