A YOUNG woman was stabbed dead by a man who attempted to rape her early Friday inside her house in Sto. Niño Gravahan, Matina in Davao City.
The victim, identified as Almira Manila, 20, was sleeping inside her room around 4 a.m. when she was awakened by a man who was already on top of her.
Police identified the suspect as Samuel Saholan Pardillo, 39.
Manila immediately defended herself but as the suspect was armed with a kitchen knife, she was stabbed several times.
But the victim was able to fight back, disarmed the suspect and stabbed him in different parts of his body.
Upon hearing of the commotion, one Ivy Manila Villahermosa responded and discovered the victim and the suspect lying on the floor with blood all over.
She immediately called for police assistance.
Both suspect and victim were brought to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) but attending physicians declared the victim dead upon arrival.
Authorities recovered a 12-inch kitchen knife from the crime scene.
Manila is supposed to graduate this year at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) with a Bachelor of Education degree.
Pardillo, who is now out of danger, is detained at the Talomo Police Station awaiting appropriate charges to be filed against him.
