    Cordova dampens firecracker vendors’ sales

SOME P60,000 worth of seized assorted firecrackers were destroyed by the police and local officials of Cordova town, Cebu yesterday.

The ceremonial destruction of the 13 sacks of firecrackers signaled an intensified campaign against the illegal manufacturers and distributors of firecrackers, officials said.

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy and Vice Mayor Rodrigo Jumao-as led the destruction of the firecrackers that included Judas belts, kwitis, whistle bombs and sparklers.

The firecrackers were soaked with water.

Sitoy, a lawyer, suggested amending Republic Act 7183, which regulates the sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

He said only firecrackers should be banned from the market, and not pyrotechnics.

The mayor said he supports the manufacture and sale of pyrotechnics, which he considers harmless.

The firecrackers were seized by PO2 Samson Igot and a team of police operatives who compose the Cordova Marine Watch, while conducting a sea patrol in Barangay Day-as at 2 a.m. last Saturday.

The sacks of firecrackers were allegedly owned by Reynaldo Lumasak. He reportedly failed to present the required documents especially the permit to transport, prompting the police to seize the devices.

The police found out that the firecrackers were bought from Marlo Avila of Barangay Babag in the neighboring Lapu-Lapu City.

The devices were supposed to be brought to Sagbayan town, Bohol.

Every year, the health department campaigns against the use of firecrackers during the Christmas and New Year’s Eve revelry.

The number of firecracker-related injuries has dropped in recent years, but the practice of lighting firecrackers, whether for merrymaking or out of superstition, still hasn’t been eliminated.

Other local governments have adopted measures like restricting the zones where firecrackers may be sold or used, as practiced in Cebu City.

I practically voted yes to ban the firecrackers and that is my opinion. Why? Because for obvious safety reasons. Although naay maligsan nga mga panginabuhian ani nga desisyon pero ang atong lantawun ang kaluwasan sa kadaghanan. If we say nga " I am a responsible person to use a firecracker." Then much better use some other means to celebrate without using those finger-popper pieces.

    Again, just my two cents.

really total ban? such a tall order and not very realistic. the government should instead implement safe production of firecrakers first.
