maybe he means activated carbon, or activated charcoal. From what I read at other sites, it's only good for getting medicine or odor out of the water. And it loses it's effectiveness really quick.

I got my res last August 12, 2010 and I worked hard on their tank and habitat to make sure they would have good water and a good basking spot, and ample space to swim around. I was worried I wasn't doing the right thing, because the nitrite levels were always above 5, but then last night, August 25, 2010, my nitrite test returned a zero result! Awesome!!! I did the test again today and it's still zero.. I'm relieved I've done something right, now the task at hand, keeping it at zero.

how do you test for nitrite? what's nitrite, anyway??

Food and waste in the tank gives Ammonia (toxic)... Beneficial bacteria in the tank that forms in your bio filter and plants, stones, gravel, decor convert ammonia to nitrites (which is also toxic), then another type of beneficial bacteria converts nitrites into nitrates (relatively harmless unless on very high levels).

It's a cycle daw since fish and turtles leave waste and sometimes we feed in the tank. New tanks like mine had like 5 or more ppm of nitrites, and I first noticed it when my goldfish (friend/food of my turts) had like black/red spots in their head, I did some research and found out that high ammonia and nitrite levels will cause fish to have difficulty in breathing, and get them more susceptible to diseases. Turtles are a bit more resistant to nitrites but resistance isn't immunity. I verified nitrite levels with a test kit that I bought, and mao jud lagi, dark purple kaayo ang result, meaning 5ppm or more, highly toxic kaayo.. Sige man gud kalibang mga goldfish ug I always used to feed in my tank.
