The Southwestern University Cobras had every chance to take a pivotal 2-1 series lead and blew all of it, allowing the University of the Visayas Green Lancers to escape with a gritty 69-65 victory in Game Three of the best-of-five Finals series in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Down by three, 65-68, with 17.4 seconds to go, SWU got a huge break when UV center Steve Akomo was called for a looseball foul and a technical foul for continuous complaining on one possession, resulting in four freethrows and possession for the Cobras.
But SWU failed to capitalize and laid a big fat egg with Junrey Ortuyo and Justin Aboude missing two freethrows each.
When play resumed, SWU wingman Bon Guillena heaved a potential game-tying three that was deflected with the ball ending up in the hands of UV’s Jerome Silva.
The Mythical Five member then sealed the win with a split from the line with two seconds remaining on the clock, putting UV just a win away from claiming the title that has eluded them for the last two years after winning the first nine crowns in this league.
Just like in Game Two, the Cobras played with a chip on their shoulders and surged in front by 11, 46-35, after an 11-2 run that was capped off by a crowd-pleasing slam dunk from Ben Mbala on a fastbreak.
UV kept at it and made its move to come to within three, 47-50, at the end of that stretch with timely makes from John Abad, Chris Perolino and Silva.
UV continued its hot streak and started the fourth with an 8-0 run anchored by Silva and Akomo, who scored on a fastbreak and in the shaded lane for a 55-50 lead, with 8:22 left.
SWU continued its pursuit and was within one, 65-66, after a nifty drive by Joseph Nalos and a transition layup by Bernie Bregondo.
SWU had a chance to take the lead as it regained possession after a hard defensive stand. But Guillena lost the ball on the inbound play. Compounding matters, Mbala was assessed his fifth and final foul on the next play, with Akomo making two free-throws for a 68-65 lead, 58.9 left on the clock.
All in all, SWU shot themselves in the foot as it committed 27 turnovers and missed 15 freethrows.
Eman Calo led UV with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second period which kept them in the game. Silva finished with 13 while Phil Mercader and Akomo each had 10.
SWU was led by the 16 of Justin Aboude. SWU’s Mythical Five guard Monbert Arong, who scored 28 in their last game, played with a fever and went scoreless.
yeah!!!..........2-1, UV leads!! woooohooooooooooooo

Cobras lose sting
By Rommel C. Manlosa

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers had the better mindset entering the match and it showed in their 69-65 Game 3 win over the Southwestern (SWU) Cobras to lead the best-of-five Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate finals series at 2-1.
The Cobras collapsed in the final period, while UV had their ways in both offense and defense in the game played at the packed Cebu Coliseum.
And watching his team fall apart, SWU coach Raul Alcoseba decided he had seen enough and left the court in the final 4.3 seconds after Justin Aboude was called for a foul on UV’s Jerome Silva after a loose ball battle, a foul that gave the Lancers skipper two free throws.

Alcoseba’s frustration started back in the second quarter when his most lethal weapon, Monbert Arong, became a liability in both offense and defense.
Arong, who scored 28 points and had eight triples in Game 2, was scoreless the entire game and contributed eight of SWU’s total 27 turnovers.
Among Alcoseba’s frustrations were the on-court arguments he had with point guard Benito Ortuyo who always insisted on a play that was opposite to what the coach wanted.
Then there was Benoit Mbala, who fouled out for the second straight game.
They, too, had an exchange of words after the Cameroonian center fouled out in the final 58.9 seconds of the game.
Mbala nearly left the court after Alcoseba wouldn’t listen to his explanations.
Missed free throws
And topping the list were the four missed free throws in the final 17.4 seconds mark – two penalty free throws of Ortuyo for UV’s Steve Cedrick Akomo’s final foul and two from Aboude for the technical foul of Akomo.
Aboude was tasked to take the technical free throws because he was 6 of 8 from the line before the pressure-packed charity shots.
UV was leading 68-65 at this moment and SWU badly needed to score to put pressure on the Lancers.
But before the Cobras collapsed in the final period, it was UV that struggled and trailed by as many as 11 points, 44-33 back at the 4:43 mark of the third period.
However, after Mbala delivered an in-your-face-dunk over season MVP Wowie Escocio and Akomo, 33 seconds later, everything started to fall apart for the Cobras.
“We were able to recover on defense, which is our best weapon for offense. After we trailed by 10 points we were able to catch up defensively and in turn we scored on their turnovers,” UV head coach Felix Belano told Sun.Star Cebu after the game.
The Lancers committed only nine turnovers in the entire game and closed the third period with a 12-4 run to move within three, 50-47.
An unsportsmanlike foul called on Bonifacio Guillena seven seconds after the start of the fourth period was all it took for UV to start a telling 8-0 run that got them the lead for good.
Emmanuel Calo, who fouled out at the 8:42 mark of the fourth, topscored with 14 points, Silva scored all of his 13 points in the last 13 minutes of the game, while Akomo and Phil Mercader each had 10 points for UV.
Aboude had a game high 16 points, Bernie Bregondo and Mbala added 11 points each, and Joseph Nalos and Guillena finished with 10 points each.

UV wins another thriller

Lancers tame Cobras a new to close in on CESAFI cage crown
CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers valiantly wiped out an 11-point deficit and then made a strong finishing kick to fluster the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 69-65, and take a pivotal 2-1 lead in their best-of-five series for the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) collegiate basketball crown last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Lancers could practically wrap up the title with another win in tomorrow’s Game 4 although the Cobras are expected to wage an all-out war with hopes of forcing a rubbermatch.
It was another sorry loss for the Cobras, who led by as much as 11 points, 46-35, on a monster slam by Benoit M’bala at the 3:58 mark of the third period.
Showing the stuff that made them nine-time champions, the Lancers crept back with finesse to eventually wrest the driver’s seat, 51-50, on a undergoal stab by Jerome Silva early in the final quarter.
Moments later, UV’s 6-foot-7 Nigerian recruit Steve Cedrick Akomo converted back-to-back hits as the Lancers gained a five-point headway, 55-50, with still 8:13 left to play.
The Cobras pulled within just a hairline, 65-66, but Akomo sank two free throws to give the Lancers a shaky 68-65 lead with less than a minute to go.
The Lancers nearly flirted with disaster when Akomo was whistled for a technical foul for resenting a call while defending Justine Aboude with only 17.4 seconds left to play.
Fortunately for UV and its large throng of spectators, the Cobras cannot make the most from the opportunity. A foul-troubled SWU pointguard Benito Ortuyo mangled his charities and Aboude also muffed his technical free throws.
After going 0-4 from the line in that instance, the Cobras still had the chance to at least send the game into overtime, but they couldn’t make one good offensive in their last possession.
Eman Calo, who fouled out in the game, paced the Lancers with 14 points. Silva added 13 points, while Akomo and Phil Mercader chipped in 10 markers apiece.
Mbala and Bernie Bregondo finished with 11 points each for SWU, while Joseph Nalos and Bonifacio Guillena III scored 10 each. The missing link for the Cobras was Monbert Arong, who was held scoreless in the entire 40-minute skirmish.
The scores
UV (69) - Calo 14, Silva 13, Akomo 10, Mercader 10, Escocio 8, Abad 7, Perolino 7
SWU (65) - Aboude 16, Bregondo 11, Mbala 11, Nalos 10, Guillena 10, Ortuyo 5, Goloran 2
na-unsa man ni si alcoseba, iya man gipang-alienate iyang mga players...
