Though USA had the better players and was obviously the best team, they didn't have the best player. NBA bound Luis Scola of Argentina was named FIBA America's MVP. Scola averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2 assists per game and hit 56.2% from the field during the tournament. Scola edged out USA's Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, Brazil's Leandro Barbosa and Uruguay's Esteban Batista. Esteban Batista is the only player in the tournament to be included in the top 5 of both scoring and rebounding and the only player to average a double double in the tournament. Batista averaged 20.8 points (4th overall) and 12.8 rebounds (1st overall) for Uruguay. USA's LeBron James and Jason Kidd were both in the top 5 in assists category averaging 4.7 and 4.6 assists per game respectively making USA the only team to have two players in the top 5 in the same statistical category.
