I saw in one of the FRINGE episodes that it caused someone to be a hermit , because whenever he was around people all their thoughts go into his mind which made him go nuts ....

It goes to say lets not play with other peoples mind or the nature of things ....

I think that idea was taken from the 1981 movie Scanners.
