Had "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" been positively received, do you guys think the DOT Sec would still call it a "concept" and that it is "still under study"?

As time passes, more and more people find it hard to trust the current DOT.

And who knows? Maybe Manny Pacquiao can help people forget about "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" and save Philippine tourism. Hong Kong tourism benefited from having Jackie Chan's involvement.

Pacquiao open to being tourism’s poster boy, peace negotiator

Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao may boost the Philippine government’s beleaguered tourism campaign as well as help facilitate peace negotiations between the government and rebel groups.

Pacquiao, who returned to the country early Saturday, said he is open to endorsing Philippine tourism, which is now in the middle of a controversy over a new tourism slogan.

“Tulad ng sinabi ko basta sa kapakanan ng bansang Pilipinas at sa mga Pilipino tulad ko, gagawin ko (Like I said, so long as it is for the good of the country and of Filipinos like me, I will do whatever it takes)," he said shortly after arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Several sectors had suggested that Pacquiao be tapped to attract tourists to the Philippines, which drew international criticisms in recent months.

Hong Kong issued a “black" travel advisory discouraging travel to the Philippines after the August 23 hostage crisis in Manila, where eight Hong Kong tourists were killed along with hostage taker, dismissed Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza.

In late October, the United States
, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia and New Zealand issued advisories hinting at possible terrorist attacks on the Philippines.

Another problem came early in November, amid a raging controversy over the Tourism Department’s new “Pilipinas Kay Ganda" slogan.

While some critics claimed foreigners may not immediately understand the slogan, others noted the new logo had been copied from Poland’s tourism logo.

Also troubling the new tourism campaign was the choice of a new website name beautifulphilippines.com, which would redirect visitors to a pornographic site.

On Friday, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim hinted the government might drop the “Pilipinas Kay Ganda" campaign due to heavy criticism.

At least someone decide to change course. Still, it will take DOT a lot of time to recover from the embarrassment of PKG, not to mention all the efforts ("intensive research") that went to waste.

Aquino wants to change new slogan for tourism

Saying stakeholders are not happy with it, President Benigno Aquino III hinted Saturday an overhaul of the government’s new tourism slogan “Pilipinas Kay Ganda" is imminent.

At a press conference in Malacañang after boxing champ Emmanuel Pacquiao’s courtesy call, Aquino said he ordered Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim to show him the blueprint of the tourism program.

“Yung nangyari noong isang araw, pwede nating masabi na nakausap yung stakeholders at mukhang hindi sila kuntento. Siguro automatic na kailangan, hindi na siguro ipa-fine-tune... ihahanap ng mas angkop [na slogan]," he said.

(About what happened in the last few days, we talked to some stakeholders and they said they were not happy with the slogan. So there is no need for fine-tuning, we have to find a better alternative.)

He said there have been indications many people liked an older slogan. He did not say if this was the “WOW Philippines" catchphrase of former Tourism Secretary and senator Richard Gordon.

But he said he ordered Lim on Friday to work on the matter and come up with a blueprint of the program.

“Lahat po ng detalye gusto kong ma-review (I want to review all the details)," he said.

On the other hand, deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said government is considering inputs from the public, which she noted are coming in through networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

“Everybody is weighing in on the preview of the new logo and branding. As [Tourism] Secretary [Alberto] Lim said, this is an ongoing discussion and an ongoing process. The DOT is listening to the people," she said on government-run dzRB radio.

According to her, there are also a number of tourism concepts being tested. These ideas, together with the inputs from the public, will be the subject of focus group discussions.

Valte said they will also add to their studies the reactions of potential tourists from target markets such as Europe and North America.

The government’s new tourism slogan “Pilipinas Kay Ganda" earned widespread criticism as several sectors questioned if foreigners can understand the Filipino phrase.

Other critics said the logo closely resembled that of Poland’s tourism packaging. Tourism Secretary Lim on Friday hinted the government may pull the plug on the packaging.

But Valte insisted the “Pilipinas Kay Ganda" slogan is only being “tested" among stakeholders.

“They opened it to preview, they invited industry stakeholders to preview because they wanted to hear the thoughts of the people on the proposed branding," she said.
