Now that San Miguel has captured the limelight because of her English, Melanie Marquez(Miss International 1979) made this comment, which, unfortunately, is in Filipino:

Pwede na na oi.Ang uban man gani kinahanglan pa man gyud ug interpreter sa ilang English.I would just wish unta nga dunay Miss world or contestant nato nga mosulti sa kaugalingong sinultian an sa mga international pageant.Wala ta kahibalo basin palang sa preliminary judging nakakuha na sya og dakong points.Dili lang baya actual night ang judging ani.

This has been very puzzling for me. In most of these pageants I've seen, some contestants don't speak a single word of english, they use an interpreter.

Unsa kaya kung yun-ana na lang pud ang mga contestants nato sa pageants, mag-tagalog, bisaya, etc., etc., unya hire lang ug bangi-itan na interpreter?

It's a beauty pageant and unfortunately, it's Binibining Pilipinas, it's more than just a beauty pageant with mere looks and the curves. Ruffa Guttierez said in her interview that "she's (J. San Miguel) representing the country" and would you be glad that foreigners would label Filipinas as dumb? She's representing Filipinas more importantly. Take note that such beauty pageants have very high standards especially in the Q and A portion and sad to say, this is one of the portions where people would really gauge the contestants. Now here comes a 17 year old contestant who can't even give a sensible answer to a question who a grade 5 pupil can answer straight. Isn't it ridiculous?

She might have won through the points but the insults will remain. Filipinas are already regarded as "domestic helpers" and "bride orders" in some parts of the world, how worst it would be if Filipinas would be regarded as dumb. It's a possibility that we all have to deal with because of her mess.

She might do good in bikini contests.
