    EAGLES SOAR TO 2-0
SHS-AdC routs defending champion UV Baby Lancers in game 2 of Cesafi juniors finals

    By Jonas Panerio
Cebu Daily News 7:28 am | Thursday, September 27th, 2012

    Game today:
    Cebu Coliseum
    6 p.m. – UV vs. SWU (Srs.)

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles are but a breath away from realizing the dream that has eluded them for two straight years after they routed the reigning champions University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 96-82, in Game Two of the best-of-five juniors finals series in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win gave the Eagles a commanding 2-0 series lead. UV denied SHS-AdC the crown last year in a heart-pounding series that went the distance.

Big man Dawn Ochea put on a performance worthy of the Most Valuable Player award that he received before the game as he scored 29 points, 15 of which came in the final canto when UV came knocking on their door. He also had 18 rebounds, three assists, a steal and two blocked shots.

The game was played tit-for-tat as UV came back from a 13-point deficit in the second period and were within just three at halftime, 37-40.

But the Eagles soared in the third canto as they went on a 19-2 run, and at one point, scored 13 unanswered points that put them on top, 61-43. Gio Laguyo started the run with an acrobatic layup and was followed by another layup by Janjan Jaboneta.

The wheels started to fall off UV’s wagon later after Paul Desiderio was called for an unsportsmanlike foul for swinging his elbow in the face of SHS-AdC’s Jair Igna, while head coach Delfin Pepito was slapped with a technical foul for excessive complaining. As a result, the lead ballooned to a high of 22, 69-47.

UV got 34 points from Desiderio again got little help from the rest of the team.

Meanwhile, SHS-AdC’s Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw snatched the Rookie of the Year award in the juniors division.

    SWU EYES 2-0

Today, the Southwestern University Cobras prepare for a huge fightback from the UV Green Lancers as Game Two of the best-of-five seniors finals series commences tonight at the same venue.

After losing twice to UV earlier in this tournament, SWU turned things around at just the right time to take a head start in the championship series after winning Game One, 77-72. The loss was the Lancers’ first in this season after going unblemished through the elimination round and the semifinals.

“It will be no secret. UV will be more aggressive. They will make adjustments but not big ones. After all, we’ve faced one another three times already this season. We know one another pretty well,” said SWU coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.

With the shaded lane too clogged for talented big man Ben Mbala to work in, the Cobras bombed away from the outside, making three three-point shots courtesy of guards, Joseph Nalos and Bon Guillena in the fourth period that spelled the difference in the tight contest.

Lancers eager to get even in Game 2
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Wednesday, September 26, 2012

IT’S back to the drawing board for the University of the Visayas Green Lancers after they were humbled by the Southwestern University Cobras in Game 1 of the best-of-5 championship series for the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college division title last Tueday.

But today, UV coach Felix “Donbel” Belano Jr. promised that his boys will bounce back and reduce the series down to three games when they meet in Game 2 at 6 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.

“We studied the video and nakita namo everything went wrong. We did not execute our game plans in both offense and defense. Nagkanya-kanya og duwa. We became complacent because the players felt we were invincible because we beat them (SWU) twice,” Belano told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

In order to regain their confidence, UV is heading back to where they started – that is the moment when they won nine straight games early this season.

“Back to the drawing board. Back to when we won nine straight games. Everything in Game 1 was all wrong, everything. So we will leave that (loss) behind now and try to move forward and look back how we’ve won games. We needed every little thing makatabang sa pagdaug. We will just try to execute and I’m sure we will bounce back and we will win Game 2,” said Belano.

Last Tuesday, the Lancers did not display what the other teams feared – its unforgiving defense and all-around offensive game.

Instead, UV was trying to contest the inside defense of the Cobras, not the usual inside-outside-drive offensive attack. And when they realized that the game was already slipping out of their grasp, SWU was already ahead by 15 points.

Defensively, UV’s transition defense was not working and its inside defense was loose.

It’s Ateneo vs. La Salle in the Final Four
    by inboundpass
    Wednesday, 26 September 2012

The De La Salle Green Archers advanced to the Final Four on September 26, 2012 of UAAP Season 75 by defeating the FEU Tamaraws, 69-66 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Norbert Torres and Almond Vosotros, unleashed a devastating 14-0 blast in the 4th quarter en route to a close win that earned them the last slot of the semifinals.

Down 50-60 with 6:46 to go in the last quarter, the Green Archers went to Torres who nailed 11 of his 21 points in the final period while rookie Jeron Teng had 15 points to put FEU out of the race, for good.

“In the first half, we kinda tight. In the huddle, I told the boys I didn’t see the real La Salle team. In the second half, they responded and it all boiled down to defense,” said DLSU head coach Gee Abanilla.

“Limiting them to just 14 points, that’s crucial for us,” he added.

Vosotros, who fired 9 points including 4-points in the 4th quarter, scored a vital triple that narrowed the gap to 59-60 then Thomas Torres scored on a three-point play off a foul by Terrence Romeo to increase the Green Archers lead to 67-60 with 38.6 seconds left.

But the Tamaraws threatened to take over the game after back to back triples from RR Garcia and Romeo that immediately narrowed the gap to 66-67 with 20 seconds remaining.

Split free throws by Teng made it a 68-66 with 21 seconds remaining while Cris Tolomia’s traveling violation led to another split from the charity stripe from Vosotros was enough to send the Green Archers back into the Final Four and will face league rival, Ateneo, for a shot at a Finals berth.

“It’s gonna be an exciting match-up. Clearly, we’re the underdogs against Ateneo,” said Abanilla, who coached DLSU’s biggest come back in the final four race after missing the semifinals last year.

The Blue Eagles hold a twice-to-beat edge in the final four.

Romeo and Mark Bringas paced FEU with 13 and 12 points respectively for the Tamaraws, who finished fifth in the season.

“I just did what the coaches told me,” said Norbert Torres, who also had 13 rebounds.

The Green Archers out-rebounded the Tamaraws, 50-30

    Individual Scores:

    DLSU 69 – Torres N. 21, Teng 15, Vosotros 9, Van Opstal 8, Torres T. 7, Mendoza 7, Andrada 2, Manguera 0, Revilla 0, Tampus 0, Webb 0.
    FEU 66 – Romeo 13, Bringas M. 12, Garcia 8, Hargrove 7, Mendoza 7, Pogoy 6, Belo 5, Escoto 4, Bringas A. 2, Tolomia 2, Cruz 0, Foronda 0, Sentcheu 0.

Where's former CIT Wildkitten and CESAFI Juniors MVP MacMac TALLO? Not a single minute of playing time? Is he being hidden in preparation for the Final 4 war with Ateneo? As I have said before... I continue to believe that MacMac Tallo's surprise decision to change from blue to green was not well thought of. He should have stayed with ATENEO. Playing with (or riding the bench) fellow Cebuanos ex UV Lancer Greg Slaughter, Don Bosco standout Omping Sumalinog and SHS AdC's former passarelle center Cris Porter. Sa LaSalle, i think si Tampus ra ang bisaya kung wala ko masayop.

    UV evens series
    By Rommel C. Manlosa

    Thursday, September 27, 2012

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers got the breaks of the game to steal Game 2 from Southwestern University Cobras, 81-79, to even the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. college division finals at 1-1 at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The diminutive John Abad again delivered the needed points for the Lancers as his triple in the final 42.9 seconds saved UV from collapsing when victory was already within grasp.

The win also doused cold water on the red hot game of SWU’s cold-blooded shooter and birthday boy Monbert Arong, who was treating Cobras supporters with an array of eight triples that made life difficult for the Lancers.

But as the break went UV’s way, Arong’s exploits were reduced to just blunt statistics as the Lancers celebrated victory after he missed the final attempt of the game.

With Arong hitting his marks, UV trailed by 10-points three times, the last time at 60-50 in the final nine minutes of the game.

UV got its first break when SWU’s Cameroonian center Benoit Mbala collected his fifth and final foul after trying to stop Steve Cedrick Akomo’s dunk in the 5:27 mark. The second was at the 3:13 mark after SWU’s other Cameroonian center Justin Aboude was slapped for his fifth foul trying to block Wowie Escocio’s shot.

Then 38 seconds later, and just moments after Arong nailed his seventh triple of the game, SWU coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba was slapped with a technical foul for excessive complaining, giving UV a chance to score three points and moved within 72-69 with 2:32 seconds left.

Without SWU’s two imports, Escocio then proved why he was named the best local player as he then scored four baskets and Emmanuel Calo delivered on a fastbreak to give UV back the lead, 75-73 with 1:15 left to play. Before that, the last time UV had the lead was at 3:31 of the second at 26-22.

But Bregondo quickly evened the game with two free throws at the other and Arong sank his eighth triple with 50.8 to go. However Abad sank a triple of his own eight seconds later to tie the game for the last time at 78.

Escocio scored for UV in the final 13.5 seconds mark and Joseph Nalos split his charities for SWU six seconds later before Abad score on a split charity for the final count.

Calo topscored for UV with 19 points on top of five rebounds, an assist and three steals, while Abad and Escocio had 17 and 16 points, respectively. Akomo finished with 10 points on top of 15 rebounds and two steals.

    UV EVENS SERIES
Green Lancers recover with 81-79 win over SWU in Game 2 of Cesafi seniors finals
    By Jonas Panerio

Cebu Daily News 6:57 am | Friday, September 28th, 2012

Faced against great odds and the unlikely prospect of falling to a 0-2 hole, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers dug down deep and got clutch baskets from their veterans to hack out an 81-79 win over the Southwestern University Cobras in Game 2 of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament finals last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

John Abad once again came up big for the Lancers with 17 points, eight of which came in the fourth period as UV tied the best-of-five series at 1-1.

Eman Calo led UV with 19 markers while league MVP and Rookie of the Year Wowie Escosio added 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles gun for a sweep and the title in the juniors division when they tangle with the struggling defending champions University of the Visayas Baby Lancers in Game Three of their best-of-five finals series today.

The Eagles aim to finish the series today after winning Game Two in convincing fashion, 96-82, with league MVP Dawn Ochea leading the way with 29 points and 18 rebounds for a 2-0 series lead. SHS-AdC won Game One, 80-76.

In yesterday’s game, SWU zoomed to a 10-point lead, 60-50, in the fourth period but disaster struck after both of their prized big men from Cameroon fouled out of the game. Ben Mbala was the first as he incurred his fifth foul with 5:27 left in the game. He was followed to the bench by Justin Aboude, who was slapped his last foul minutes later.

With the SWU frontline looking pint-sized, UV veteran guard Phil Mercader and Escosio worked down low with the latter’s basket inside the lane eventually tying the game at 73-all. Calo stole the ball on SWU’s botched inbound play and layed the ball in for a 75-73 lead with 1:16 left.

SWU’s Bernie Bregondo calmly sank two freebies to knot the count once more at 75-all. Arong, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday, utilized a screen from Bregondo, rose up high and sank a straight-away trey to give SWU a 78-75 lead with 50.5 ticks remaining.

The Lancers’ Abad got open from the left wing and swished the equalizing three-pointer. SWU had several chances to retake the lead but Bregondo and Joseph Nalos missed leading to a broken play with the ball eventually ending up in Escosio’s hands. He made an unmolested layup to give the driver’s seat back to UV with 13.3 left.

The Cobras had a chance to tie the game as Nalos was fouled on his way to the rack but the guard gave in to nerves and split his charities for a 79-80 count. Abad was sent to the line with 2.6 seconds remaining where he sealed the game with a split. SWU was led by the 28 of Arong while Mbala got 13 points.

Lancers hit back at Cobras to even series
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 28, 2012 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers scraped through an 81-79 victory over the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in Game 2 to even their best-of-five seniors division finals in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Newly-crowned MVP Hernal "Wowie" Escocio struggled almost the entire game including a bunch of missed free throws, but he made up from his slump with a huge recovery after giving the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers an 80-78 lead in the final 13.3 seconds of the contest.

In the ensuing sequence, flashy pointguard John Michael Abad split his charities and that was all he needed to help UV escape with a heart-stopping conquest of the Cobras.

There could be too many heroes for the Lancers in preventing a deep 0-2 hole as trailed by 10 points on two occasions, the last time was at 50-60 at the final 8:50 mark of the contest.

Monbert Arong drilled in eight three-pointers including a huge buzzer-beater ending the third period to finish with 28 points, but the star of the night was Abad, who tied the count at 78-all with 41.9 seconds left before Escocio put the Lancers back on top.

The playing filed was leveled late in the fourth period when the Cobras' Cameroonian recruits Benoit M'bala and Justine Aboude trooped to the showers with five fouls. It was in that juncture that the Lancers decided not to play a 2-3 zone to discourage the Cobras from enjoying a space enough to launch long distance attempts as Arong was sizzling all throughout the match.

The Cobras were leading by six points, 72-66, after Arong buried one of his bone-breaking treys, but a technical foul by SWU coach Raul Alcoseba for continuous complaining with 2:35 to go in the final canto gave the Lancers a chance to comeback.

After that infraction, the Lancers outscored the Cobras, 9-1, with time winding down to 1:55 and the Lancers led by two, 75-73, on Eman Calo's lay-up. The only basket from the Cobras in that stretch was a free throw by Joseph Nalos.

Calo led the Lancers with 19 points even as he was also a huge factor in defense. Abad added 17 points and Escocio chipped in 16 points, while 6-foot-7 Nigerian center Steve Cedrick Akomo added 10 markers.

The other top contributors for the Cobras were M'bala with 19 points, Bernie Bregondo with 12 points and Bonifacio Guillena III with 10 points.

Game 3 of the series will be played on Monday yet because the Coliseum is not available. (FREEMAN)

    The scores

    UV (81) - Calo 19, Abad 17, Escocio 16, Akomo 10, Mendoza 6, Mercader 4, Silva 3, Oktubre 2, Perolino 2
    SWU (79) - Arong 28, Mbala 19, Bregondo 12, Guillena 10, Nalos 5, Ortuyo 3, Aboude 2

    Magis Eagles mohimo'g kasaysayan

(BANAT SPORTS)
