CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras finally lived up to their lofty billing by beating the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament late Saturday.
Games tomorrow (Cebu Coliseum)5:15 pm USC vs. USP-F (Sec.)
6:45 pm USP-F vs. USC (Coll.)
The win was first for the Cobras, who stumbled against two underdog squads. More than logging their first win, the Cobras also ended a three-game winning streak of the Lancers.
SWU was up by 15 points, 40-25, in the third canto and then suddenly almost had no answer to UV’s 15-4 run that made it, 44-40 with just 1:51 to go before the end of the quarter.
After looking like they were in shock for seven minutes, the Cobras closed the third period with a 6-0 blast to regain a 10-point lead, 50-40.
UV got back its bearings again with a 16-6 run to start the final canto that put them even with SWU, 56-all, after a basket by veteran Harold Cincoflores with 3:18 left in the ballgame.
SWU’s Bonifacio Guillena Jr. knocked in a triple to give his team back the lead then he scored on a short stab before splitting his charities to give the Cobras some breathing room, 62-56 with a minute left.
SWU center Justin Aboude, who stands at 6-6, hit a floater that gave his team a 64-56 advantage and the final tally.
Eleazar Armecin paced the Cobras with 15 points. His team is anticipating another tough battle against defending champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters on Thurs-day.
The 2-0 Webmasters recently saw action in the University Games in China.
Although winless as they faced teams from Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, New Zealand and Japan, they considered the experience as something that would help them become better for the local league.
Aboude added 13 points for SWU while Guillena and Rene Pacquiao had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Abad led the Lancers with 11 points and Cincoflores added 10 markers.
The Cobras earlier lost to unlikely tormentors University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Panthers.
The scores:
SWU (Coll) 64 - Armecin 15, Aboude 13, Guillena 12, Pacquiao

Panthers gun for third straight victory By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 23, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
CEBU, Philippines - The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers try to extend their winning streak to three games in a row for the first time under coach Raul Latonio, Sr. as they test the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in the lone collegiate match of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament tonight at the at the Cebu Coliseum.
Games today
(Cebu Coliseum)
5:15 pm USC vs. USP-F (jrs.)
6:45 pm USPF vs. USC (srs.)
In the juniors division, the same schools will slug it out, with both the Baby Warriors and Baby Panthers seeking for their first win.The Panthers, donning the Rose Aquarius jersey, showed a lot of improvement in the off-season and even became the surprise package in the 5th CESAFI Partners' Cup where they defeated all rivals including the top three contenders namely UC (Gaisano Capital), UV (Lion-Tiger) and SWU (San Marino Corned Tuna).
Not only that, USPF was the lone team to survive the onslaught of the visiting University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons in overtime, while the rest were being easily demolished by the UAAP squad including the UC Webmasters who lost by more than 20 points.
Their offense is reliable and their defense is doing wonders. Again, the Panthers will pin their hopes on leading scorer Fritz Dajalos, outside gunner Joseph Sedurifa and veteran pointguard Randy Avila. These three holdovers are among the main weapons of coach Latonio.
The present Panthers' crew also know how to handle pressure at the endgame unlike in the past seasons where they would break under tense situations. They have the killer instinct and could make rallies in a blitz as what they've shown in their game against the Cobras.
Resiliency has been labelled to teams which are quick to come back instead of folding up. The Panthers now deserve to be called as such.
Earlier this afternoon, the Baby Panthers try to score their first win in two starts against the smaller Baby Warriors, who are still searching for answer to arrest a three-game skid. (FREEMAN)

USPF hopes to extend streak By Edri K. Aznar
Monday, August 22, 2011
THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) was one of the worst teams last season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate basketball tournament. Surprisingly this year in the 11th season of the Cesafi, the Panthers have been off to a hot start, going unbeaten by winning its first two games.
Today, USPF attempts to win its third straight game for the top spot in the rankings, as it takes on the University of San Carlos Warriors in their collegiate division match at 6:45 p.m. at the Cebu Coliseum.
USPF won its opening game with a 73-63 rout of the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and then followed it up with an upset over the Southwestern University Cobras, 62-59, win for a 2-0 record this season.
USC, on the other hand, is 2-2 after dropping its last game to league-leader University of the Visayas Green Lancers, 80-60.
A win by the Panthers could give them the solo leadership in the collegiate division, while a victory by the Warriors could book them the second spot.
Meanwhile, before the collegiate game, the younger counterparts of both teams will be pitted against each other in the high school category at 5:15 p.m.
Both the USC Baby Warriors and the USPF Baby Panthers are winless this season and are looking for their first win in the tournament.
The Baby Warriors have a 0-3 record, while the Baby Panthers are 0-1.
