Globe ready to defend market: official
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
MANILA -- Globe Telecom officials admitted in a press conference Tuesday that tougher competition is looming with the PLDT-Digitel merger, but said "it doesn't change the whole lot for us."
Ernest L. Cu, president and chief executive officer of Globe Telecom, said they have always been a “strong challenger to a dominant incumbent,” with the company now posting a double digit revenue growth.
"2010 closed on a high note with consolidate fourth quarter revenues of P16.7 billion, one of the highest in history. Our core mobile business led the fourth quarter surge with service revenues by 13 percent higher versus the last quarter," he said.
As to the broadband and fixed line business, Cu said they continue to gain scale contributing nine percent of their consolidated results, "as service revenues grew two percent over the previous quarter, and resulted in full-year revenues 32 percent highest compared to 2009."
This improved fourth quarter performance of Globe, Cu added, allowed them to get service revenues of P62.6 billion, which is slightly higher than the P62.4 billion of 2009.
These positive gains, coupled with its transformation plans aimed to make the company "truly service-oriented," are enough reasons for Globe to continue its current path to defend its market, he said.
"Rest assured that Globe stands strong and ready to compete now and in the future," said Cu. (LRM/Sunnex)

Globe admits worries over competition
By EMMIE V. ABADILLA

MANILA, Philippines – “We are worried over the long term, how our competitor will act and how the government will preserve the competitiveness of the telecom industry,” Globe Telecom President and CEO Ernest L. Cu acknowledged in Tuesday’s annual stockholders’ meeting when asked how the carrier, the country’s second biggest, sees the merger of its two competitors Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Digitel).
Still, “Over the short-term, we continue to gain market share. We don’t run a business hoping the competition will be friendlier,” he stressed.
Indeed, tougher competition looms as a result of the PLDT-Digitel merger, according to Cu. “Their merger gives them considerable scale. But Globe has always been a strong challenger to a dominant incumbent. Even in the face of larger opposition, our strategy to differentiate ourselves by providing superior customer experience remains a sound one.”
Developing the right products for retail and corporate clients along with enhancing the network to deliver superior customer experience will enable Globe to compete, he believes.
Already, ‘We are optimistic about Globe’s 2011 first quarter performance. The momentum is strong across the portfolio and the momentum we saw in the second half of 2010 continues,” noted Peter Bithos, Advisor for the Consumer Customer Facing Unit.
The Philippine telecom market is maturing and becoming more competitive, he went on. “Now, we have to get market share where we have never gone before. We are down to making different offers to different provinces, towns, individuals. It keeps us on our toes.”
As Globe transforms itself more and more into a service-oriented company, positive business performance follows, Cu pointed out.
Incurring higher operating expenses for expanding its mobile and broadband networks, Globe’s net earnings plunged 22 per cent last year, from P12.6 billion to P9.7 billion. However, “Globe still delivered consistent 21 per cent Return on Equity (ROI), which is above the market average ROI of only 17 per cent,” the CEO underscored.
The telco closed 2010 on a high note, with consolidated fourth quarter revenues of P16.7 Billion, one of its highest in history. With its core mobile business boosting its fourth quarter performance, Globe hauled in a total of P62.6 billion, slightly higher than 2009’s P62.4 billion.
“Our broadband and fixed line business continued to grow, contributing 9 per cent of our consolidated results as service revenues grew 2 per cent over the previous quarter and resulted in full year revenues 32 per cent higher versus 2009,” according to Cu.
In the last quarter of 2010, Globe’s mobile business posted its fifth consecutive quarter of growth due to service offers popular with customers and the carrier added 1.1 million new SIMs, ending the year with a mobile SIM base of 26.5 Million, 14 per cent more than 2009.
Capital expenditures for 2010 totalled P19.5 billion versus P24.7 billion in 2009. Of this total, about P9.1 billion was for wired and wireless broadband capacities while P7.9 billion was for expanding and upgrading the mobile network. For 2011, Globe expects to spend an additional US$500 million, including carryover spend from projects started in 2010.
“We will strengthen our backend systems and delivery platforms to support even more aggressive offers.” Globe will have even more customer focus in the future, the CEO pledged.

it's all talk. They think that with the bandwidth cap on home users, maka apas sila sa profit margins sa PLDT, wla sila na sipyat ug calculate ani?
This thread is wasteful. Any and all articles, opinions, whatever, regarding the PLDT purchase of Sun Cellular should be posted under the thread below:

Are you collecting threads
Since this is about Globe's response to the merger, then it should be posted there.
It's a waste of space and very redundant to keep creating threads everytime one side or the other responds about the merger.
Geez.
