President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday summoned Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim to a meeting in Malacaņang to thresh out the conflict over the proposed tourism slogan for the Philippines.
The President confirmed that his closed-door meeting with Lim on Friday afternoon sought to determine if the slogan, “Pilipinas Kay Ganda,” will be pushed through or not. The result of the meeting between the President and his tourism secretary at 4 p.m. on Friday was still unknown as of press time.

And even before the "Pilipinas Kay Ganda" disaster, Cebu's tourism players had been at odds with the DOT secretary.
Tour operators in Cebu expressed dissatisfaction over the “lack of direction” and “lack of focus” that the Aquino administration, through Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, was showing on the tourism industry.
Lim, however, said some of his critics were being manipulated by people who wanted him to stop espousing an open-skies policy, which would allow foreign airlines to operate in domestic routes in the Philippines.
Jennifer Franco, Tourism Congress vice president for the Visayas and Cebu-based travel agency operator, said it was time for the tourism department to convene all tourism players and discuss the next steps in promoting the Philippines as a top tourist destination.
“We are not happy about what is happening. The honeymoon period is over for the DOT (Department of Tourism),” said Franco, also Cebu chapter chairperson of the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (Naitas).
On Tuesday, Franco said members of her group visited Lim in his office but until now, “there has been no formal meeting to discuss any tourism roadmap or what to do after he assumed his role (as tourism secretary).”
Lim said the criticisms being hurled at him could be coming from disgruntled members of the Tourism Congress who were ejected from their positions by an executive order of President Aquino removing non-career appointees of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo from government.

Nothing was paid? What do you thinking with this news?
Not a single centavo was paid for the conception of the new but widely criticized new Philippine tourism brand “Pilipinas Kay Ganda,” according to Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim.
Campaigns and Grey, an advertising agency, helped the new tourism administration come up with the idea and design of the campaign slogan, which aims to draw at least 3.8 million foreign tourists
to the country by the end of 2011.
After being chided for its lackluster appeal and for having a website whose name was similar to that of a porn site, the DOT again drew flak from Internet users who pointed out that the “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” design had obvious similarities with Poland’s tourism logo, “Polska.”
Lim countered that although there were similarities with Poland’s tourism motif, there were differences too.
No copyright on font
“First of all, Poland doesn’t have a copyright on the font,” he told the Inquirer by phone on Friday. “What looks very much alike is the font, but if you look at the colors, they used one color, we used several colors.”
“We have a coconut tree, they don’t. We have a tarsier, they don’t. We have ‘Kay Ganda,’ they don’t,” he pointed out.
At the unveiling of the new Philippine tourism label earlier this week, Lim told the Inquirer that the tarsier and the smiling coconut tree were inputs provided by President Aquino when his team presented it to him.
The tourism chief also reminded critics on Friday that the new campaign was only a preview meant to draw suggestions from the public.
‘Work in progress’
“This is a work in progress and we are listening to the public, so it could change, definitely,” he said.
The ad agency, he added, did all the work for no cost “for the love of country.” “They also know that the DOT has a very limited budget,” he added.
In a separate phone interview, Assistant Secretary Benito Bengzon said the creative aspect of the new campaign was being subjected to focus group discussions.
“It is being reviewed but what is important is that we are hearing out comments from various stakeholders and we are open to suggestions,” said Bengzon.
A DOT has allotted P200 million for the new tourism campaign but Lim said the budget remained intact. “We haven’t paid a single centavo to Campaigns and Grey,” he added.
Bengzon said a budget has been allotted for the creative aspect of the campaign but he could not disclose the amount “at the moment,” he said. “But certainly, there has been no payment made at this point.”

Change it to "Pilipinas Win na Win"! ABS and Noynoy kiss each other's asses anyway.
BIG BOO-BOO AGAIN. Last Monday, Nov. 15, Secretary Alberto Lim launched the Philippines’ new tourism marketing program with the slogan “Pilipinas Kay Ganda” at the Mall of Asia with Vice President Jejomar Binay as guest of honor. Last Wednesday, the Manila Bulletin carried an 8-column color photo of Lim, Binay and DOT Undersecretary Vicente Romano III offering a toast on its front page.
An uproar of protest erupted led by lawmakers, tourism industry leaders, broadcasters and columnists unanimous in objecting to the new “tourism brand”. Many are saying there was nothing wrong with the existing “Wow Philippines” slogan.
The feisty Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago told reporters she thought the new brand “is just ignorant and ignorance is boring”.
Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, Sen. Loren Legarda and “Wow Philippines” author, Sen. Dick Gordon, and House Minority Leader Edcel Lagman were unanimous in objecting to a slogan foreigners would not understand. Zubiri said “somebody is drinking on the job.”
Sec. Lim immediately retreated and said the brand is not final and can still be changed. “At this time, it is still a concept and still under study.” Trial and error again?
Why do an elaborate launching of a program that is not final and is still under study? Sec. Lim and Usec. Romano has just substantiated Sen. Miriam Santiago’s complaint that the “Aquino Cabinet is a bunch of lightweights”.
