US overcomes rocky start to beat Lithuania 77-61
MADRID (AP)—Kevin Durant scored 15 points and the United States overcame a poor shooting start and early nerves to beat Lithuania 77-61 Saturday in a warmup for the basketball world championship.
The U.S. trailed 15-7 after shooting 3 of 21 and making six turnovers in the first period.
The Americans regained their composure against an equally poor-shooting opponent, taking the lead for good at 54-49 near the end of the third period after Lithuania was assessed a technical foul and flagrant foul by Mantas Kalnietis. It was part of a 17-0 U.S. run led by Russell Westbrook and Eric Gordon(notes).
Linas Kleiza scored 12 points for Lithuania, which hit 25 of 62 shots to the Americans’ 27-of-58 shooting.
Durant, Rajon Rondo, Chauncey Billups, Andre Iguodala and Tyson Chandler started as expected against Lithuania, which was coming off a 94-75 loss to Spain on Friday. The U.S. had won its only previous exhibition against France.
The inexperienced American team’s nerves showed early under Lithuania’s pressure, and it took Rudy Gay’s entry to spark the U.S. But it was the play of Westbrook and Gordon in the third quarter that gave the U.S. a winning cushion. Westbrook finished with 12 points and five rebounds, and Gay 14 points and five rebounds.
Gordon made all four free throws after the flagrant call and followed up a Westbrook dunk from a steal with his own lay-in as the U.S. went into the fourth period full of momentum and ready to run its fast break. Lithuania didn’t hit a shot for five minutes during that time.
The U.S. plays defending world champion Spain on Sunday.

Everyone was impressed at Rubio not just with his play-making skills but also with his defense.
“He’s an amazing defender, that’s one thing that stood out to me is how well he pressured the ball
and disrupted our offense,” said Durant, who led the game with 25 points. “He’s flashy, he’s
crafty as well and the passes he did tonight were kind of amazing.”“He’s gotten bigger and he plays outstanding defense, and because he’s a pass-first
guard—he’s going to be liked by everybody who plays with him,” said Krzyzewski, whose U.S.
team came up against Rubio in the Olympic final two years ago. “He’s improved his shooting and he’s not afraid.”Yahoo!Sports“It was great just to test him. He’s a young player and he played great,” Rose said.
“He really runs the offense well … I think he’s ready for the NBA.”
"LET'S GO ORANGE" US BEATS SPAIN 86-85
MADRID — Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim called for a switch to his trademark "Orange" 2-3 zone with the United States clinging to a one-point lead.
Kevin Durant did the rest, blocking shots by Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez in the final seconds in the Americans' 86-85 victory over Spain on Sunday in a warmup game for the world championships. (click here for Team USA vs. Spain Highlights Video)
"Jim Boeheim said, 'Let's go orange,'" U.S. head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "So we did. It was his suggestion and our guys did a good job with that."
Durant led the United States with 25 points.
The decision to go to the zone defense for the last play caught Spain off-guard after Derrick Rose put the Americans ahead with two free throws.
"I just wanted to cover as much ground as I could and help my teammates," said Durant, who also had 10 rebounds. "I just didn't want to foul on a 3-pointer so I stayed down and, luckily, game over."
The United States rallied after Spain 13 points behind after three quarters took a one-point lead on Juan Carlos Navarro's three-point play with 27 seconds left.
"It was one of those games that was a learning experience for us and I think we made key plays down the stretch," Durant said. "We also played as a team and stuck through tough times."
Navarro scored 20 points in the first game between the teams since the Americans won the 2008 Olympic final. It was the first loss in nine games for Spain, the defending world champion. The world championships begin Saturday in Turkey.
Spain took the lead for the first time with 90 seconds to play. Rubio's stutter step into the lane drew attention and allowed the teen point guard to feed Felipe Reyes for an easy layup and an 82-80 lead.
But Durant answered before Rose got past Rubio and avoided Marc Gasol's block to score with a one-handed shot that put the U.S. up 84-82 with 33 seconds to play.
"We made one more play than they did and that's why we won," Krzyzewski said.
Rose finished with 13 points, and Lamar Odom had 12 points and nine rebounds for the United States, 3-0 on its exhibition tour.
"I thought 'I've got to hit them,'" Rose said about his winning free throws. "Over here, people are going to remember me for this."
The U.S. travels to Athens on Monday to play Greece in its final warmup match ahead of the world championships.
"It was a great challenge and we should take this and run with it," Rose said.
Gasol had 17 points for Spain.
