I watched the live CNN coverage of the Saddam statue teardown in Firdos Square and remember it was an M88 recovery vehicle that pulled down the statue. There were USMC M1 Abrams loitering about but they held back.

The Saddam statue that fell in Najaf was blown up rather than pulled down.

Thanks, m249s. There was apparently more than one Saddam statue in Najaf because the one that was blown up supposedly depicted Saddam on horseback. The one pulled down by an M88, as Roy also recalls, which was carried live by most major news networks, was in Baghdad. Looks like the US went on a Saddam statue teardown spree.
