More than 20,000 attend Duterte rally in Davao | Headlines, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – It was said to be the biggest political rally in the history of Davao City when more than 20,000 gathered Wednesday night to light a candle and give the presidential bid of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte a boost less than two months before the May 9 elections.
People from all walks of life came to take part in the Kahayag sa Pagbag-o (light of renewal) rally, which capped the daylong celebration of the city’s 79th founding anniversary.
A candle-lighting ceremony highlighted the rally where Dabawenyos went out of their homes or opened their windows to light a candle for Duterte’s candidacy. The participants also called for an end to disorder and for genuine change in the country.
Duterte said he was humbled by the support of Dabawenyos as he vowed to do his best for the city and the country.
He reiterated his promise to stop illegal drugs, criminality and corruption in the first three to six months of his term if he wins the presidency.
The city government also strengthened its fight against criminality with the distribution of 35 mobile patrol cars for the police stations and units to better serve the city’s two million populace.
At least 12 cars were given to the mobile patrol group and four each to the Sta. Ana and San Pedro police stations, which both serve the central business district.
Three cars were assigned to Talomo police station while the Buhangin, Bunawan and Toril stations received two each. The Sasa, Pacquibato, Tugbok, Calinan, Baguio and Marilog stations were given one car each.
Duterte said that all vehicles shall be provided with police drivers and one police escort each.
Aside from the patrol cars, Duterte also cited the grocery and rice allowance given to policemen on top of the salary and benefits they receive from the Philippine National Police.
“Our policemen need all the help we can give them so that they will be able to properly function as they are mandated without resorting to illegal activities,” Duterte said.
Davao City is among the local government units in the country that gives substantial support to police units.
