Navy suspends underwater search in Cebu sea mishap
CEBU, Philippines—The underwater search for at least 200 passengers and crew who remained missing after the ferry they were on collided with a cargo vessel off Cebu has been suspended due to rough waters, the Philippine Navy said Saturday.
But Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesman Armand Balilo said in a separate interview that its own search and rescue operations continued.
The MV St. Thomas Aquinas ferry was carrying 870 passengers and crew when the accident occurred late on Friday night in a dangerous choke point near the port of Cebu City, authorities said.
As of 11 a.m. Saturday, coast guard and military vessels, as well as local fishermen in their own small boats hauled 629 people out of the water alive.
And by early Saturday afternoon, 210 people were still unaccounted for and 31 bodies had been retrieved, according to the PCG, which warned the death toll would inevitably rise.
However, the 2GO group shipping line confirmed in a press forum Saturday that only 25 were recorded dead while 59 were missing.
Philippine Navy Lt.j.g. Mark Anthony Colina, Navy Seal team leader said they were expecting to resume the underwater search by 3 p.m. Saturday with the help of technical divers.
The MV Thomas Aquinas sank in waters about 200 meters deep, making it difficult for ordinary divers to conduct underwater search. With reports from Agence France-Presse and Associated Press

Tinuod ni nga apprentice ang gepadala sa timon?
Asa man diay ang Master pagka hitabo ani? Ang Chief Officer ngano wala manpod nagbantay?
murag mag libog ang mga tao ana dah...
para nko mao ni ang akong pag sabot sa newtons third law "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"
if two ships are heading on a collision at both in 20kts. ang force nig bang-ga nila kay 20kts ra ghapon..
example ang speed sa ship1 nag dagan kay 17kts then ni bang-ga og wall, by Newton's law - sa pag bang-ga the wall will causes an equal force to the ship1 in the opposite direction, mao na mu hunong ang ship1 og ang wall maoy mu dawat sa force nga g-himo sa ship1. (lig-on man ang wall mao dli kaau dako ang damage)
ang paspas na barko would be better protected, kay naa man nya ang greater velocity and it will transmit all of its greater force sa hinay na barko.
lisod ni xa na situation kay mu matter man ang material and structure sa ship.. dli pariha sa wall nga dali ra kaau ma explain..
