GMA bets massacred by non-TU, 9-3 — SWS

    03/08/2007

President Arroyo’s endorsement of her senatorial candidates is proving to be a real kiss of death, as only three of the Team Unity (TU) bets made it to the survey’s Senate Magic 12 list, with the Genuine Opposition (GO) bets, all seven of them lording it over the list, the Social Weather Stations Survey (SWS) results released to the media yesterday showed.

More alarming for the administration candidates is that the same survey shows reelectionists Senators Ralph Recto and Joker Arroyo along with former Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, while making it to the list of 12, have been losing ground, when compared to the past surveys, with Sotto, from fourth to eighth place and Recto, who slipped from fifth to sixth place. Joker Arroyo is at 12th place and may be dislodged.

Opposition candidates, taken in the sense of being non-administration currently have a 9-3 lead over the administration’s TU coalition in the Senate race in the SWS survey conducted on Feb. 24 to 27.

Topping the survey was reelectionist Francis Pangilinan (LP) who was chosen by 56 percent of registered voters — not part of TU, although his status with the GO at the time the survey was taken was seen as opposition affiliated.

It was also a time when Pangilinan had full media visibility while the controversy over his status raged.

The next five candidates are all part of the GO: Loren Legarda (NPC) in second place, with 54 percent; Manuel Villar Jr. (NP) in third with 52 percent; in fourth and fifth, Alan Peter Cayetano (NP) and Panfilo Lacson (UNO) with 43 percent; and in sixth place, Francis Escudero (NPC) with 37 percent.

They are followed by two TU members, with

Recto (Lakas) at seventh place, with 37 percent and at eighth is Sotto (NPC) with 31 percent.

Again, the GO bets appear in the slate, with John Osmeña (UNO) and Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III (LP) with 30 percent, in places nine and 10. Detained Sen. Gregorio Honasan (Independent), gets the 11th slot with 29 percent. The final slot goes to TU bet Joker Arroyo (Kampi), with 28 percent of the vote.

Within bounds of statistical error are, at 13, Edgardo Angara (LDP), with 27 percent and 14, GO’s Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel (PDP-Laban) with 26 percent.

GO elder Ambassador Ernesto Maceda told the Tribune that the SWS survey validates the Pulse Asia Manila survey in that the pro-opposition sentiment of Manilans is shared by Filipinos nationwide.

Maceda predicted that as the days go by, the GMA bets will likely slide down some more.

SWS said that the survey points to at least an 8-4, and at most a 10-2, score in favor of non-TU candidates as of the end of February. The term non-administration includes two independents.

A significant distance away are: 15. Michael Defensor (TU), 16. Sonia Roco (GO), 17. Juan Miguel Zubiri (TU), 18-19. Cesar Montano (TU) and Richard Gomez (Ind.), 20. Vicente Magsaysay (TU), 21. Anna Dominique Coseteng (GO), 22-24. Prospero Pichay Jr. (TU), Antonio Trillanes (GO), and Tessie Oreta (TU), and 25. Luis Singson (TU).

Pangilian, reacting to his topping the survey said he was “humbled” by the results, and thanked the people for putting their trust in him.

Of interest is the SWS survey showing that the issue of political dynasty is a false issue and a non-issue among voters.

    GO leads even in Palace-commissioned survey03/07/2007 | 08:00 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us Even in Malacañang-commissioned survey, senatorial candidates of Genuine Opposition clobbered the 12-man Team Unity of the administration.

A copy of the survey conducted by an unnamed foreign firm which was commissioned by the Arroyo administration showed that six opposition candidates made it in the Magic 12, four from the administration and two independents.

The copy of the survey was distributed Wednesday to reporters covering the Senate. The source said Malacañang was not happy with the result and decided to hide it.

Loren Legarda was the topnotcher with 62 percent of the total 1,500 of those surveyed nationwide, followed by Senate President Manuel Villar (49 percent), independent candidate Francis Pangilinan (46 percent) and Panfilo Lacson (45 percent).

Administration bet Ralph Recto (41 percent) was in fifth, followed by teammate Edgardo Angara who tied with opposition bet Francis Escudero (35 percent) in sixth and seventh place.

Come backing opposition bet John Osmeña placed eighth place with 34 percent, followed by Vicente Sotto III (31 percent) in ninth place.

Notably, Osmeña ran under the administration during the 2004 elections while Sotto was the campaign manager of the opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino. They have now switched positions, with Osmeña running under the opposition and Sotto under the administration.

Another independent candidate, detained rebel-turned politician Gregorio Honasan came in 10th place, followed by administration bet Joker Arroyo and opposition dark horse Sonia Roco who wrapped up the Magic 12.

Former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor, Allan Peter Cayetano and Benigno Aquino III were in 13th to 15th in the survey, who tied with 27 percent.

The survey was conducted between February 24 and 27, with error margin of 2.6.

^^ I guess the firm stand of Kiko Pangilinan not to join the opposition has given him a favor.

It just surprised me that John Osmeña made it on the top 12 list. Is this a real survey or not? I guess we really have to conduct a survey of our own here in istorya.
