I think it will also be quite difficult for DENR to automatically categorize the tokay to be endangered not without a quantitative study of the remaining populations of tokays here in the Philippines. It is only when concerned groups or individuals make a quantitative data collection of the remaining populations will the DENR be able to assess the real status of tokays. Take note: the keeping of tokays without a farm permit is still illegal but still DENR has no hold nor control over those that are keeping them secretly, even when they are transported without a transport permit(pre-requisite to this is a farm permit or Certificate of Wildlife registration or CWR) is still illegal.......it aint that easy for DENR as well.

i think it practically boils down to a race on whoever develops the cure first. Tokays doesn't breed and multiply as fast as other animals. it takes a year for them to develop sexually and the most that one female can produce in a year is between 6 to 10 hatchlings.

Given this reproductive rate, and with the volume to which they are being taken from the wild, their population will surely suffer in no time.
