The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving is a good read, but it's for mature readers only since it tackles several of our social taboos. Still, it's full of lessons and one can easily empathize with all the main characters.

I would actually recommend Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. It's raised a lot of hell all over the world because of the author's controversial parenting tactics. It made me curious, being part Chinese myself. This is supposed to be a self-deprecating, satirical memoir but some parts are still a bit shocking; we just need to find the humor and light at the end of the tunnel in there somewhere.
Curious. But how does this work?
^we had about 5 discussions two years ago. we just agreed on the book of the month, taking into consideration diversity (author, genre, form, etc.)
