As far as adaptation goes, this movie stuck pretty close to the book. The things they did change and omitted are minor details probably due to time constraints and continuity issues. I think the faithfulness of the material has something to do with the author actually being one of the screen writers for the movie. Very often the book authors never gets a say on the screen writing process. The book reads like a movie anyway, which is understandable since Suzanne Collins is originally a screen writer. What worried me initially when they first announced that they were going to do a movie was how it would translate being a first person narrative, in Katniss' perspective, to a movie where we can't be in Katniss' head anymore. I think they did a good job translating it from first person to third person narrative without loosing the intimacy that this story is about Katniss' journey.

The books will always be nicer than the movies. Because your imagination runs freely while reading it.

Exclusive: Gary Ross Leaves 'The Hunger Games' Franchise, Won't Direct 'Catching Fire' Sequel

I'm not too worried about this. It's only 3 maybe 4 movies, if it was 8 movies like Harry Potter then I would worry about consistency. They already got a pretty solid cast and as long as they keep the screen writers, the franchise should be ok. Plus I wasn't too crazy about the shaky cam. My wishlist directors would be: JJ Abrams, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott or Alfonso Cuaron.
