All communist sympathizers and supporters of the adage "take from the rich and give to the poor" need to read The Law by Frederick Bastiat. It is the eminent, timeless thesis in support of true democracy (individualism and liberty) and against socialized plunder (collectivism and social dictatorship).

In summary, The Law puts forward the very simple premise that socialist ideas that may sound good in theory, such as subsidized college education, are always anti-democratic and anti-liberty because in essence they involve legalized plunder. Furthermore, he argues that because socialist laws are usually enacted by legislators who seek to impose their views upon their subjects, their enactment is essentially a continuation of the imperialist ideals of the "benevolent tyrant" of ancient Greece and Rome.

He also argues that socialism cultivates a mentality of entitlement, wherein everyone participates only in the democratic exercise in order to further their own interests (or class interests, as the case may be) even if such involves what amounts to plunder. When you take from the rich and give to the poor, that is what it is: plunder. You would recognize it as theft when a poor thief steals from a rich man's house because it is contrary to law, but because socialist legislators make the law itself a tool for plunder, this form of legalized plunder takes on an insidiousness that can only come from the perversion of the law itself. This mentality of entitlement (to legalized plunder) is apparent when PUP supporters say that "when circumstances suddenly change and are now contrary to expectations, thats when people react." Notice that it is the very entitlement to subsidized schooling that the government provides that is now used as an excuse for the student's behavior, clear evidence that feelings of entitlement are now what fuel their call for even more entitlement and plunder.

It is sad that the ready credulity of pro-PUP supporters is clouding their judgment, they see the plight of the students but do not understand the very concept of legalized plunder and the evils they propagate throughout society. Let me end with a very poignant quote from Bastiat:

"Man can live and satisfy his wants only by ceaseless labor; by the ceaseless application of his faculties to natural resources. This process is the origin of property. But it is also true that a man may live and satisfy his wants by seizing and consuming the products of the labor of others. This process is the origin of plunder." (emphasis mine)
