@karen - Below are my personal tips when buying a DSLR (and assuming you have understand why you wanted to switch to DSLR):

    1. Research on the basics of a DSLR system. Be familiar with the lingo such as exposure, apertures, auto-focus, ISO, noise, fps, etc.

    2. Identify your budget and your future DSLR system spending.

    3. Go to camera shops here in Cebu and try out all the camera brands. Bring your own memory card (SD or CF or both!)

    - Is the camera comfortable in your hands?
    - Is the weight of the camera right for you?
    - Shoot some pictures using your own memory card with the camera that you have tried. Image Quality (IQ) mostly depend on what lens you attached to a camera but assuming that you'll have the kit lens for a while (the standard lens that usually go with the camera on purchase), evaluate if the image quality suits you. Default camera settings is okay, you can tailor it later but you can ask the shop attendant to change the settings for you so that you can test them.

Post those pictures here and let the existing DSLR users give their critics regarding IQ, sharpness, etc. Don't put "picture a is taken by brand x". You'll be surprised they wont know the difference which picture is taken by brand x or y.

    4. Figure out what you like to shoot the most? Landscape, wildlife, portraits, sports/fast action photography, etc. I mentioned this because there are some features in a camera that you might not need, an example is high fps which is (may) not overly used on portraits but will be handy during sports/fast action. On a well lighted studio, you may not need to bump up your ISO to take those shots hence noise will not be a factor (but i may be wrong on this one). My point here is identify what you like to shoot the most and identify if your DSLR body and lens can handle it performance-wise, output-wise, etc.

    5. If you are really brand conscious, be brand model conscious too!. Not because everybody is using Brand X Model 2007 it does not entirely mean that it outperforms Brand Y Model 2008 even if Brand Y is an underdog in the market.

    6. Check the local support. Service centers, availability of purchase of camera accessories compatible to your system, etc.

    7. Know the capabilities of your tool (camera) and make sure you are satisfied on how it captured that image for you.

Bottom-line, what matter most is the image that you captured and shared with others.

Have fun with your future DSLR!
