Spurs sign Anthony Tolliver
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they signed forward Anthony Tolliver. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The 6-8, 240-pound Tolliver played on the Spurs summer league teams in Las Vegas and at the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City. He averaged 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23.0 minutes while shooting .571 (12-21) from the field and .615 (8-13) from beyond the arc in three games in Las Vegas. At the Rocky Mountain Revue Tolliver appeared in all four games, averaging 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 26.5 minutes while knocking down 53.3 percent (8-15) of his shots form beyond the arc.
Last season Tolliver played for the Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League. He appeared in 25 games averaging, 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 27.4 minutes per game while shooting .509 (112-220) from the field. Prior to joining the Energy Tolliver was in training camp with Cleveland Cavaliers and appeared in three games before being waived.
Tolliver spent four seasons at Creighton University where he averaged 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 124 career games. As a senior, he averaged 13.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.7 blocks in 33 games and was named first-team All-MVC after being the league’s only player to rank in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots per game. Tolliver was also named a Senior CLASS Award All-American and a Second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
This move is most probably a replacement for Brent and Horry since shooter man jud ni si Tolliver. I hope Gist, Hill, and Mahinmi are signed next (in that order).
Let’s count ways we’ll miss Horry
Richard Oliver: Oliver's Twist
Express-News
I’ll miss Robert Horry.
Not because he’s a great quote, though he is. Not because he’s had his heroic moments, though he has. Not because he treats the common fan with a modicum of respect, though he does.
No, I’ll miss Horry because when the going gets tough, he goes and gets nasty. And the Spurs need that.
The headline example, of course, is the notorious moment two seasons ago when the warhorse forward hip-checked Phoenix guard Steve Nash, causing the Canadian to animatedly flop into the AT&T Center scorer’s table as if downed by a sniper.
Another might be the crunching pick set on New Orleans’ David West and his sore back last year, a forearms-to-the-kidneys move described by one blogger as “cunning and cold-hearted.” West went down in a writhing heap, and our man Horry strolled away with the casual ease of a man checking his petunias.
Those were telling moments, to be sure, but another from last year’s postseason was arguably the most hard-hitting argument for keeping Horry on site.
In a blowout loss at Phoenix, the Suns had several starters inexplicably on the floor while up by 24 with 3:38 left. Thus, when a ball headed out of bounds, the veteran leapt, snatched it and turned to rocket it off the leg of Amare Stoudemire.
It ensured a meaningless Spurs possession. But more importantly, it ticked off Phoenix coach Mike D’Antoni. His face scrunched like a constipated Shar Pei, he groused about the play until he was tossed with a couple of minutes left.
A couple of days later, when the teams continued the series in San Antonio, Horry folded his lanky 6-foot-10 frame over one of the folding chairs on the Spurs bench before the game. Did the team notice, he was asked, that the Suns had starters still on the court late?
Horry, a smile on his face, nodded. Why then, he was asked, didn’t he aim at a more painful target on Stoudemire’s person?
“I used to pitch in baseball,” Horry replied. “I could have.”
Indeed, had the situation called for it, he would have.
And the Spurs need that.

Summer League Recap
by Patrick Rees, spurs.com
The San Antonio Spurs participated in two summer leagues this off season, the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League and the Rocky Mountain Revue, hosted by the Utah Jazz. The Silver and Black played four games at each event and ended with a 2-2 record in Las Vegas and a 3-1 record in Salt Lake City. The summer league roster was highlighted by second year forward Ian Mahinmi, the three rookies selected by the Spurs in the 2008 NBA Draft and Anthony Tolliver, who spent 2007-08 with the Iowa Energy of the D-League. Below is a highlight of what Malik Hairston (48th overall by Phoenix, Oregon), George Hill (26th overall, IUPUI), James Gist (57th overall, Maryland) and Anthony Tolliver (un-drafted, Creighton) accomplished in both leagues.
JAMES GIST
Las Vegas
The University of Maryland product had a very solid showing in Las Vegas. He was third on the team in scoring averaging 10.8 points, second in rebounding with 7.3 and first in blocks with 0.8 per contest. Gist shot a team best .621 (18-29) from the field and tallied two double-doubles while appearing in all four games with three starts. His best outing in Vegas came against the Hornets when he scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds and two steals.

The Spurs first round draft pick George Hill (26th overall) was also experiencing his first taste of professional basketball at the NBA’s Summer League in Las Vegas. Hill appeared and started in three of the Spurs four games while averaging 8.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and a team-high 3.0 assists. Hill logged 33 minutes per contest which was second only to Ian Mahimi, the Spurs second year player who was drafted 28th overall in 2005. Hill’s best performance of the Las Vegas Summer League came in the Spurs 78-76 victory over the Grizzlies when Hill tallied 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

ANTHONY TOLLIVER
Las Vegas
The biggest surprise of the Spurs summer league team was Anthony Tolliver. The 6-8 forward from Creighton earned himself a contract and signed with the Spurs on July 23, one day after the team was done competing at the Rocky Mountain Revue. Tolliver made the most of his opportunity and got off to a good start in three games and one start in Vegas. He averaged a second-best 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23 minutes per contest. Tolliver shot a second-best .571 (12-21) from the field and a team-best .615 (8-13) from three-point range. He posted 10 or more points in each of his three outings and had his best performance against New York with 10 points including 3-of-5 three-point attempts and nine rebounds in 19 minutes.

Tolliver continued his solid play as the Spurs completed their summer league schedule with four games in Salt Lake City. He averaged a third-best 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 26.5 minutes per contest. Tolliver also continued his pin-point accuracy from downtown shooting a team-best .533 (8-15) from behind the arc and a second-best .517 (15-29) from the field. His best performance came against Atlanta when the sharp shooter tallied 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting including 5-of-6 three-point attempts, five rebounds and two steals in 26 minutes.

Interesting read: the Spurs and Jannero Pargo.
Courtside | mySA.com
It appears the Hornets might be ready to live with Mike James as a backup point guard this season allowing Janerro Pargo to sign with another NBA team, possibly the San Antonio Spurs. Pargo's agent, Mark Bartelstein said the Hornets "don't seem interested in signing (Pargo) at this point. I don't think he'll be back with them at this point." Hornets general manager Jeff Bower on Tuesday declined to comment on any on-going negotiations with free agents. Pargo has drawn some interest from at least two Western Conference teams, the Denver Nuggets and this week from the Spurs.
