MISSED TRADE OPPURTUNITIES
Plenty of deals got done on Thursday (especially if you were Chicago, New York, or Oklahoma City), but even more rumored transactions never got completed. Here are a few of the more notable missed chances:
Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland – This was about as ridiculous as a trade rumor gets, especially considering the Cavs wanted to ship out Ben Wallace to get the Big Shaqtus. Where does O'Neal play, power forward? If not, does Zydrunas Ilgauskas play power forward? However you look at it, this move would've made the day extremely interesting, but it just wasn't meant to be. Or, the Cavs just didn't think it was worth trading Wally's expiring deal to bring in the big guy.
Gerald Wallace to Portland – The reported deal centered around Nicolas Batum and the expiring deal of Raef LaFrentz, but somehow Kevin Pritchard didn't bite. Not sure how—Wallace would've been a perfect fit for the Blazers.
Tyson Chandler to Oklahoma City – Turf toe schmurf toe. The Thunder got a really talented player for next to nothing and then rescinded the offer. Keep the guy. Let him heal. He really wasn't worth Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith?
Andres Nocioni to Boston – After being moved to Sacramento, word leaked out Thursday that the Kings were looking at shipping him off to the defending champs, who were reportedly considering trading their entire bench for the guy. Noch could've been the much-needed Posey replacement in Beantown, but apparently decimating their bench just wasn't worth it.
Amar'e Stoudemire to Chicago – Once Terry Porter was fired in Phoenix it became clear that Stoudemire wasn't going to be traded, but before that point there were strong indications over All-Star weekend that STAT was Windy City-bound in exchange for Tyrus Thomas, Drew Gooden, Thabo Sefolosha, and a draft pick. Would've been a coup for Chicago, but the Suns are probably better off having stood pat.
Kirk Hinrich to Minnesota – Had Bulls GM John Paxson sent the Captain' packin' to the Twin Cities, he wouldn't have gotten much in return. Chicago was looking at Jason Collins with Rashad McCants or Brian Cardinal for Hinrich, not because those guys make the Bulls better, but because those guys' salaries don't commit the Bulls long-term the way Hinrich's multi-year, multi-million dollar deal does. That would've completed Chicago's reformatting, sending away all the bad long-term contracts not in Chicago's future (Hinrich, Nocioni) and all the veteran players who would take away minutes from the young guys (Hughes, Gooden). Oh well. Three out of four ain't bad, and Hinrich is probably the most helpful and talented of the quartet.
Some of these moves may make more sense by the time summer rolls around, but for now things have come and gone and teams are (for the most part) stuck with what they've got for the rest of the year. A lot got done before the deadline, but so much was still left in limbo. We'll just be stuck for the next few months wondering what could have been.
