CATMON, CEBU
Catmon was once colony of unbelievers, worshipping no god but nature. They live in native cogon huts under tall trees, like mushrooms in the glade. Big trees known locally as “catmon” grew abundantly along the hillsides and sandy beaches of the locality.
There is one particular big Catmon and its outspreaded branches, located in the heart of the area. The tree has become the favorite spot for travelers and natives who were seeking some rest under some cool shades.
The legend about the etymology of the town’s name came to being here, in the exact spot where the tree stood. One day, a Spanish conquistador came upon the village and chanced to see some natives lazily lounging around the place. Interested to know the name of the place, the visitor asked the natives, “Como se llama este legar?” which means “What is the name of the place?”. Bewildered by the foreign language, they answered directly, “Catmon”, thinking he was asking about the name of the tree. Thus, the town became Catmon and was organized in 1835.
Five kilometers from the town proper is the old Catmon, locally termed as “Catmondaan”, one of the town’s barangays. It is where the original municipality was established (now it is transferred along the seacoast) and the town’s church was constructed.
Based on the church records, the construction started in November 2, 1835 under Fr. Miguel de Jesus but it was made only of nipa and cogon. In 1854, Fr. Juan Juseu made it concrete with stones and corals taken from quarries, 7 to 8 kilometers away. The dome was completed in 1873 under the supervision of Fr. Jose Miramon and the roofing and the altar were completed under the instructions of Fr. Francisco Bargasa. The church is the very place where the Christianization of the natives took place. The primary structure of the church remains intact until this very day.
