Senators want Lim to explain new tourism slogan
COURTESY: ABS-CBNNEWS
MANILA, Philippines - The government's heavily criticized new tourism slogan, "Pilipinas Kay Ganda," is among the issues that Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim will have to explain to lawmakers when he takes the hot seat at the Commission on Appointments (CA), Senator Chiz Escudero said on Thursday.
Escudero, a member of the CA, refused to say, however, if this will jeopardize Lim's chances of getting confirmed, and how many appointees will get the CA's nod. "Ayaw kong magbilang at manghusga, pangunahan ang desisyon ng CA," he said. "Depende kung masasagot nila, at depende kung ano ang isasagot nila ang magiging boto ko."
In a statement on Thursday, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri also said Lim has to explain at the Senate's deliberations on the proposed 2011 budget how the department came up with the "infamous" slogan, and how much it has spent for it.
Escudero joined fellow senators who dislike the slogan "Pilipinas Kay Ganda," criticizing the government's attitude of changing almost everything associated with the previous administration.
He believes the old tourism slogan, "WOW Philippines," was effective enough and does not need to be changed.
"Hindi ko alam kung bakit mayroon tayong ugali na basta bago yung administrasyon, bago din lahat, na basta galing sa dating administrasyon, kailangan huwag ipagpatuloy at kailangang baguhin," Escudero said.
Although he loves the mother tongue, Escudero said a slogan in Filipino should not be used for a campaign that intends to attract foreign tourists to the Philippines.

Sec. Lim will not get a high satisfaction rating with this one, the survey was conducted before this issue so the next survey will be interesting.
I personally would love to hear Sec. Alberto Lim explains his side to the Senators.![]()
As usual.. The Aquino govt never fails to hit the headline. Is there a department under his regime that is properly working?
Why change the WOW Philippines into something that foreigners would find a hard time interpreting the meaning? Don't tell me with all the money they have, the best thing their hired graphic artist could come up is to copy Poland's design? And what I've heard, the previous name was something taken from a porn site? geeesh... I sure do hope there is something good that will come out of this...
di kasabot ang akong mga ig-agaw nga tua sa amerika ana.![]()

so onsa man inyong suggestion for the new slogan? like "enjoy philippines", "i love you philippines," "beautiful philippines", post na!
DOT secretary Lim fights back
Lim said the criticisms may already be taking their toll this early. "Sa dami ng batikos baka di na matuloy (With all these criticisms, we may drop this line)," he said.
He also took a dig at critics, who he said are claiming to be more knowledgeable than the "researchers" who coined the slogan.
"Kung talagang ayaw ng tao, mas marunong pa sila sa research, e di baka umatras na lang kami (If people reject it because they think they know more than the researchers do, we will back off)," he said, adding that the slogan was a product of “research."
Lim said they had planned to make "ganda (beautiful)" a household word just like "Sayonara" (Japan) and "Aloha" (Hawaii).
But if the new slogan is dropped, he said they are ready to use again the "WOW Philippines" tag.
"Ang problema ang slogan natin dati na yan at naiwanan tayo ng iba kasi di nagamit, di bago, it's nothing new. Sila nag-spend sa kanilang brand, tayo hindi," he said.
(We can return to ‘WOW Philippines.’ But the slogan is outdated because it was not used for some time. Other countries spend much for their branding, we don’t.)
Lim admitted something...
"Nagkamali kami sa choice ng address ... Di namin naisip may porn site (We made a wrong choice of Internet addresses. We never thought it was close to a porn site)," Lim said.

Now that he responded, what do you think of him? Should Cebu welcome him if ever he visits?
