he's more on his trademark...Tapping. But, when it comes to shredding...forget about him, grabe ka hugaw mag shred. Despite of that, I still respect him. I love his licks, melody..
mao jud! kiat lang ang nawong... maypag mag keyboardsita siya...hahaha!

dunno unsa storya why you call him 'hambog' but anyways i respect what you say. but anyways, eddy is a very good player not to mind or classify him in the category of shred kay di man sad cguro na pang shred jud iya. pro unprecedented sad bya na sya sa iyang styl, you have to pay close attention to get to what he's doing. he also revolutionized a lot of guitar playing, ie. tapping, floyd rose tricks etc... and many a great shredders guitar players look up on him or more pointedly started the road by embracing his playing. to mention a few are gilbert, becker, thorsten <- (this player has a strange way of playing, he's left handed but plays a right handed guitar meaning he plays with the strings inverted.)

People who say that Eddie Van Halen's trademark is only "tapping" obviously don't know that much about guitar playing. Because if people here who criticized Van Halen actually knew what they were posting about, they would realize that Eddie Van Halen REVOLUTIONIZED not only rock guitar, but GUITAR PLAYING in general during the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's.

Aside from technique, which consisted of (FAUX HARMONICS, PALM MUTING, LEGATTO, TREMOLO, DYNAMIC RHYTHM PLAYING and about 60% of what guitar playing technique was during the 1980's NOT JUST IN ROCK, BUT IN POP, JAZZ, ETC), he also influence how guitars sound (everyone during this time mixed Chorus with Distortion to get his sound) and how guitars were made ( humbuckers and Floyd Rose Tremolos were the staple).

Try listening to ANY Van Halen song. Then, if you are really a guitarist worth your salt, TRY TO COPY THE PLAYING. You will realize that it is not just TAPPING.

Even today, there is not a guitarist ALIVE who can brag that he changed how people viewed and heard music except for Eddie Van Halen.

Btaw. I even know of a shredder who can basically nail a lot of of malmsteen stuff but found it hard to nail a VH song. And what does he comment bout eddy?, "articulate, and never a straightforward player". his unorthodox way and very good ear(shaping, defining sounds) makes him a formidable player.

Carlo, you nailed it right on the button!!! I couldn't have said it any better. You must be one savvy guitarist! I'm no card-bearing member of the Eddie Van Halen Fans Club, but the first time I saw that lick on "Jump"...he just blew me away and I think he's one of the century's greatest guitar innovator. If i were to pick one of the best rock guitar albums of all time, I'd say it's- Van Halen's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge"!

    Cheers!!!

    Mao.

    Tilapan tika, Ja.
Great suggestion! The idea of trading licks was unthinkable back in the sixties when there were no chordbooks and tablatures published yet, and the only way to copy the licks was by ear. And you'd have to slow down the speed of those antiquated vinyl records to copy the really fast and difficult licks. And cool licks and neat chords was a game of one upmanship between rival guitar "tambays" of yore! there were no intellectual property rights for transcribing chords and licks, boang naku no to share it with the other tambays when it took me one whole day to transcribe the chords in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band? Usahay sumbagay pay resulta if the other gang can't "steal" your chords! Oh well, those were the good old days, long before bell-bottoms, tie-dyed t-shirts, shoulder length hair became the fad!
