This team has to sacrifice, Guiao formally names 14 players in the RP NT
National coach Yeng Guiao yesterday formally named the 14 members of the pool from which will be culled the 12 members of the RP Team for the World Championship qualifying tournament next year.

It’s now a matter of trying to sell them to the system he and his powerhouse group of advisers think will get the job done.

Team Philippines lacks some ceiling going into the Fiba-Asia men's championship.

A Filipino playing US NCAA Division One basketball may solve that.

RP team coach Yeng Guiao said his staff is waiting for Japeth Aguilar to arrive in May - just after the six-feet-10 center's college graduation - to bolster the Nationals' chances.

SBP pool banners RP bid in SEAG
By ABAC Cordero and Nelson Beltran Updated November 15, 2008 12:00 AM

The team that’s being formed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and being placed under the supervision of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman will represent the country in the Laos SEA Games next year.

Noli Eala, the SBP executive director, yesterday said the team, to be composed of the country’s finest talents from the amateur ranks will see action in a few other international tournaments before the SEAG.

“Well you can say that in terms of impact, the SEA Games will be their baptism of fire. But before that, once the team is formed, they will be exposed internationally,” said Eala.

Toroman is conducting by-invitation-only tryouts for the team. It starts today at the Xavier School in San Juan and resumes on Nov. 17, 20 and 21 at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

Eala said 40 players have been invited, and while Toroman is in charge, a “slew of Pinoy coaches” are also helping out, like Chot Reyes, Allan Gregorio, Eric Altamirano, Fritz Gaston and Sandy Arespacochaga.

Eala, however, said that “it’s very possible” that Toroman, who led Iran to the FIBA Asia Championship last year, will call the shots in the end.

Among the amateur players who have caught Toroman’s attention were UAAP stars Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Chris Tiu, Nonoy Baclao and Ryan Buenafe, La Salle’s Rico Maierhofer and JV Casio, San Beda’s Ogie Menor and Jake Pascual, Jose Rizal’s Mark Sena and John Wilson and San Sebastian’s Arvie Bringas.

There are a few other players from Cebu led by Greg Slaughter that Toroman wants to look at.

Meanwhile, at least three US-based Filipino talents have expressed their desire to join the pool by next year.

Eala said they’re seriously considering to acquire the services of Japeth Aguilar, Ray Parks and Gian Tiu who have all been exposed in US varsity basketball.

“I have spoken directly to Japeth and he’s definitely willing to join us. He can come as early as March if they don’t make the US NCAA proper and by April if they do,” said Eala of Aguilar, the former Ateneo player now with Western Kentucky in the US college ball.

“I understand coach Yeng (Guiao) is also considering Japeth for his team. We’ll be very happy if he can play but I see him as a long-term project,” said Eala on Aguilar who apparently has bulked up and grown up at 6-foot-10.

Japeth is the son of former national and pro cager Peter Aguilar.

Parks, meanwhile, is son of seven-time PBA Best Import awardee Bobby. He’s a legitimate Fil-Am, his mother being a Filipina.

“I have also talked to Bobby Parks. We’ve invited him and his son to come to Manila. Bobby is very happy his son is being considered for the pool. They’re interested to relocate to Manila,” said Eala.

“Ray is a top US NCAA prospect. He’s 6-4, playing guard for a leading Memphis Tennessee high school team,” Eala said.

Tiu is another US-based Filipino high school player standing 6-foot-9.

Philippine Basketball Association - GUIAO BARES RP TEAM LINEUP FOR 2009 FIBA-ASIA WARS

GUIAO BARES RP TEAM LINEUP FOR 2009 FIBA-ASIA WARS
Team to chart own destiny, will play in SEABA tilt in May
    Thursday, 13 November 2008

Coach Yeng Guiao Thursday made public his official list of players who will comprise the Philippine Team that will try to defend the SEABA championship and gain passage into the FIBA-Asia qualifying tournament for the World Championships.

Named to the team were Ranidel de Ocampo and Arwind Santos of Air21, Willie Miller and Sonny Thoss of Alaska, Barangay Ginebra’s Jayjay Helterbrand, Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola, Purefoods 1-2 punch of Kerby Raymundo and James Yap, this season’s No. 1 overall pick Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, Cyrus Baguio of Red Bull, San Miguel’s Mick Pennisi, Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia and Talk n Text rookie Jared Dillinger.

Except for Santos, Miller, Baguio, Reyes and Dillinger, the rest were members or part of the pool of the previous RP Team coached by Chot Reyes.

Guiao said the team he assembled is blessed with speed, scoring ability and athleticism.

The team has an average ceiling of 6-foot-4.

"It is not as big as I would want it to be. Sana meron nga tayong naturalized players na seven-footers who can match-up with the big players of the Middle East and probably Japan and Korea. But Mick and Asi are here so they can provide us with some size and match up to a certain degree," Guiao said.

"I am very confident of our talent from the point guards to the guards. They are potent players at those positions," he added.

Before going public of his choices, Guiao first revealed his roster to the PBA Board of Governors, who hosted him to a lunch meeting to show their support for the RP Team.

To underscore the seriousness with which people involved in the project are taking the mission, the PBA gave the green light for the all-pro squad to compete in the all-important qualifying competition leading up to the FIBA tournament

"We'll represent the country in the SEABA," Barrios announced in a joint press conference at the league's office in Libis, Quezon City.

With the go-signal, Guiao's team will see action in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship in May 2009, which serves as the qualifying event for the FIBA-Asia tilt.

No venue has yet been set for the SEABA competition, which Chot Reyes' RP team swept last year in Ratchaburi, Thailand en route to clinching a berth in the 2007 FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, Japan.

Barrios said they have already informed the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas of the PBA board's decision through vice chairman and PBA Board member Ricky Vargas of Talk 'N Text.

The PBA Board thought it would be best if Guiao and his charges represent the country in that event rather than gamble with a different team.

"The SBP, particularly its president Manny Pangilinan, is very supportive of the PBA," said Barrios.

The SEABA joust will mean adjustment in the PBA calendar, however.

"We still don't know where and when exactly, but it's possible to take a one-week break (during the Fiesta Cup)," Barrios said.

Guiao said he will gather the team over dinner on Monday "to orient (the players), talk about the philosophy of the team, set the objectives and bond together."

Hard work begins on Nov. 24 when the team starts training at the San Juan Arena from 6-9 p.m.

Noticeably out of the team are Jimmy Alapag and Mark Caguioa, both members of the national team that placed ninth in the FIBA-Asia qualifying tournament for a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Guiao said he strongly considered the two but felt Alapag will be a mismatch against big guards while Caguioa's absence in the ongoing KFC PBA Philippine Cup due to injury makes it hard for Guiao to make an assessment of his readiness.

Japhet Aguilar, a 6-10 former Ateneo Blue Eagle now studying at Western Kentucky U, will be arriving in May and is willing to go through a tryout for the team, according to Guiao.
Barrios, who was seated next to Guiao when the RP coach made the announcement, said the team might compete in the Jones Cup and another short tournament in the Middle East as part of its preparations. He said the SBP is also working to host a pocket tournament to provide the team with enough games before it goes to battle. (DBC)

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced yesterday that it has already informed the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) about its desire to host the 2011 Olympic Qualifier.

    Guiao wants a run-and-gun quintet

Yeng Guiao and his chosen few tasked to carry the country’s colors in next year’s Fiba Asia Men’s Basketball Championship had a fruitful evening of practice at The Arena in San Juan Monday night.

The normally fiery mentor was a picture of composure, but sometimes was joking around and having a good time—a stark contrast from his firebrand personality from his regular games.

We would again call on the Fil-Foreign players based in North America to take note of the announcement below. For the other Forumers who have contacts in North America who are talented basketball players who are worth considering, do appreciate you relay to them the info below.

A letter from Mr. Caloy Allado:

    Sir:

We are writing you in behalf of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Inc., the governing basketball body of the Philippines. The BAP-SBP has embarked on a program for the next four years to regain our basketball supremacy in Asia.

As a result, we are staging a Fil-Am All Star camp scheduled sometime in April 2009 to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. We will be having two categories:

    a. Senior Level (19-26 yrs old with college ball experience)

    b. Junior Level (15-18 yrs old with high school ball experience)

The final number of teams will be determined on the number of players that will be nominated.

The purpose of the Fil-Am camp is to identify potential members for the Philippine national team that will compete in the Asian Games in 2010, Qualifiying Tournament leading to 2012 London Olympics and other international tournaments in the next four years. The national coach and his staff will be present in the camp.

We would appreciate your assistance in spreading the news to your members/players and hopefully you could nominate players to this camp.

For further information, please call or email me.

    Sincerely,

    Caloy Allado
