I think for students mostly kay peer pressure and para IN and cool tan.awn. I stay away ani nga bisyo when I was still a student dili angay2 magbisyo2 kay hilas tan.awn gipaeskwela ra baya ta sa atong parents.

I have a case study in my Psychology module nea same rasad ang question.
90% is because of peer pressure. bisan pa tong mga anghel og nawng, pa barkadaha og smoker, dba matakdan sad na. ;D

This entail two things: imitation and reputation.

Imitation ~ whatever the adults feed visually to the young, chances are
they're going to mimic those actions thinking that's it the right thing to
do... It's our responsibility to guide them the consequences if one smokes.

When I was small I used to imitate my mom (who used to be a chain smoker)
smoking by using the cigarette candy sticks (uso au ni in the 80's hehehe), I
thought I would look more sophisticated holding a stick while talking hahaha!
Then as I grew up I noticed my Dad never smoked nor drank any alcohol and
I asked him why, he simply told me that he still wants to live longer to see us
grow, graduate and have a family of our own. Then I realized smoking is totally
a health-risk.

Reputation ~ due to peer pressure young kids resort to smoking because they
were egged on by their friends that it's cool to smoke (NOT!) and apparently
these kids have this innate longing to belong in a cool group or at least to have
friends and not be treated as outcast. This realization is rather sad. Worst, once
you prohibit them to smoke the more they won't stop and be stubborn about it.
Naa bya sa bawal ang lami, as the cliche goes.
