One of the most surprising things about Korea for me was that even though I grew up in America, my mom still tried to teach me Korean traditions. When I came to live here, it helped me with many problems because unless you're 100% Korean, there are inevitably going to be some cultural differences between you and your friends/classmates/colleagues. The most familiar thing about korean culture that is commonly known to foreigners is, of course, the Chuseok holiday. Everyone knows that Koreans eat a lot of rice and hang out with their family on this holiday more than any other day of the year. However, what Koreans do on Chuseok is not enough for me. I felt that if my mom only taught me these things when I was younger, I would be able to experience more of Korean culture than I am now.
