Misuari calls accord ‘fake’, a slap to MNLF

The Moro National Liberation Front on Monday opposed the signing of the framework agreement, which it said was fake, even as some 6,000 MILF members signified their intention to get back to MNLF control.

“The MNLF is not threatening in any sort because you cannot intimidate the government, but we are just telling the truth,” MNLF spokesman Emmanuel Fontanilla said.

He said the government’s signing of the framework agreement with the MILF was an insult to the peace agreement that it signed with the MNLF in 1996 that the Organization of Islamic Conference recognized.

Hours before the formal signing of the deal, former MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari, who supposedly held a meeting with the head of the Organization of Islamic Conference in Makati on Monday morning, submitted his report on the draft agreement forged by the government with the MILF.

He held a press conference in Makati but invited only the representatives from three media organizations.

Misuari did not reveal what his report contained, but he said he and his group would not initiate violence in Mindanao as a result of the deal that eventually will create a Bangsamoro region.

He urged his followers not to initiate any moves that would result in violence, but he was quick to remind the government that he could not control the people under him.

Misuari said the deal was an insult to the MNLF because the group was not consulted.

“This is a direct slap to the MNLF and to the other Muslim people who were not even consulted before the framework was drafted,” Misuari said.

The MILF has 10,000 armed followers stationed in different parts in Mindanao, but the impending return of the 6,000 MILF to the group will dramatically change the security landscape in Mindanao, particularly in Maguindanao, the home of many of the MILF’s members.

The MNLF will hold a summit in Davao city on Oct. 21 to thresh out its possible options to the framework, but Fontanilla said the convergence would not ignite trouble.
