FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Updated April 02, 2009 12:00 AM

Charice and her mom Raquel Pempengco with Muhammad Ali during a tribute to ‘The Greatest’ in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 28 — PHOTO BY MILLIE GURFINKEL

    Curtain-raisers:
    • Kim Atienza, now non-political and hosting two shows on ABS-CBN (the weather report on TV Patrol World and Matanglawin), has a question: “Why are they tearing down my billboards on Quirino Avenue and South Super Highway when they are not political at all? I am shown in Bench green tees advocating environmental awareness (‘Save the trees, save the nest’) and holding a rufous hornbill (kalaw). I have long renounced politics.”

    * * *
As Funfare reported in a “scoop” two weeks ago, Charice flew to Phoenix, Arizona, from L.A. where she shot her scenes for Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel to perform at a tribute to Muhammad Ali on March 29 (along with, among other A-list performers, Josh Groban, Bon Jovi, Jordin Sparks, Quarterbacks John Elway and Steve Young, Forrest Whitaker, Bo Derek and Big Fat Greek Wedding star Roy Firestone).
“I was nervous and excited and I couldn’t help but cry when Ali hugged and kissed me,” Charice told Funfare. “Ang saya-saya ko po at ang bait-bait niya.”
When she sang, it was Charice’s turn to make Ali teary-eyed.
“Napaluha siya nang kantahin ko ang I Will Survive (the Gloria Gaynor hit song). I went down the stage and approached him while I was singing. Nakita kong naluha din ang wife niya. Then, niyakap niya ako at hinalikan. Muntik akong matunaw sa excitement!”
Charice sang two other songs, Beyoncé’s Listen and the Michael Jackson signature song Billy Jean.
“I did the Ali Shuffle while singing that song at doon siya napangiti. I was told that he doesn’t smile daw dahil nga may sakit siyang Parkinson’s Disease.”
Now a certified jet-setter, Charice is leaving again (with her mom Raquel), this time for Italy where she’s appearing in a TV show. She’ll be away for one week.

Oi murag giinitan man si Kuya Kim sa mga pulitiko.

    Kapamilya day in Davao
    By Maridol Rañoa-Bismark Updated April 02, 2009 12:00 AM

Davao City , Philippines — You know something is cooking in the country’s durian capital the minute you look around. Gaisano announced a sale on March 13 to 16 (with a midnight sale on March 14). SM Davao brought down prices almost at the same time — on March 14 to 16.
Our Philippine Airlines flight from Manila is full of passengers eager to attend the Araw ng Dabaw festivities. Marco Polo Hotel is humming with guests.
And ABS-CBN stars Gabby Concepcion, Enchong Dee and Melissa Ricks are waving and smiling at a horde of fans. Yes, the Kapamilya Karavan is in town to make this busy, fun-filled weekend more colorful.
Forty-two-year-old Gloria Buscano brought her two children and a nephew as early as 11 a.m. to Gaisano Mall, not knowing that she will get P5,000 for being an early bird to the Kapamilya show around an hour later.
Face flushed with excitement, the housewife vowed to use the money to treat her little companions to a shopping spree.
Buscano was not the only one who went home P5,000 richer that day, care of ABS-CBN. Nineteen other early birds (or a total of 20 persons) each had P5,000 more in their pockets after the Kapamilya network gave away cash to those who showed up bright and early at Gaisano that afternoon of March 14.
That’s a total of P100,000 cold cash to lucky, overjoyed Davaoeños in just one glorious day.
Others carried away loot bags from sponsors like Smart Communications after they answered Sam Milby, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson to the question who among the ABS-CBN talents endorse Smart.
There were other questions, to be sure, each one connected with the sponsors. The person who gets the answer right goes home with a loot bag.
The dancing was not as abandoned as the one you see in Manila. After all, Davao is a more conservative place to be. But the smiling faces tell you the young people on stage were having fun.
Still, even the most reserved young lady broke out into screams when Enchong surfaced on stage and serenaded the crowd. The screams reached deafening proportions; the jumping up and down were frenzied. Three girls, unable to control themselves, joined Enchong onstage and took turns taking their photos with him through their celphone cameras.
No, there were no sampaguita garlands. They belonged to the time of Guy and Pip. But the girls had little notebooks for Enchong to sign, outstretched arms to hug their idol tight and tissue paper to wipe his sweating forehead.
“Sino ang babae sa buhay ko?” Enchong asked the crowd. “Wala! Lahat ng gusto ko, taken na!”
    The crowd roared.
It was the guys’ turn to gawk when Melissa, wearing a mini-skirt jumper, took centerstage.
“Come up here and join me,” she teasingly asked a guy from the audience. After the shy guy eyeing her refused to budge, Melissa went right up to him, took his hand, led him on stage and serenaded him.
Okay, so the young people were happy. But what about their parents?
The answer came a few minutes later when Gabby came out, singing Iisa Pa Lamang. This time, it was the mothers’ turn to take out their mini-cameras (the real thing, not the celphone variety), aim them at Gabby and go click, click, click! It was their turn to wave frantically at their idol and smile from ear to ear at him.
The moms may not dance as fast as their daughters. But this doesn’t mean they can’t show their love for Gabby by getting as near to him as possible on stage and off, and shaking his outstretched hand many times over.
The collective adulation was contagious. A girl, taking the cue from her mom, mounted the stage and sang and swayed to Manila, Manila with Gabby (at one point, he changed the lyrics from Manila, Manila to Davao, Davao).
A burst of confetti rained down on stage and brought the show to a rousing finale.
    Same time next year then!

    Sarah Geronimo health advocate na
    Updated April 02, 2009 12:00 AM
