Japan is quite expensive but it really is cheap for people working there because they have high salaries.

Define cheap? I worked there and I got a better than average salary for someone may aage, even for Japanese. However, riding a taxi did not feel cheap to me. Riding the shinkansen sure as heck didn't feel cheap. And NO WAY did Tokyo feel cheap (compared to other cities).
